Wild Things sign infielder
The Washington Wild Things announced Friday the signing of Abraham Sequera, an infielder who played his college ball at North Florida and spent this summer with Boise in the independent Pioneer League.
With Boise, Sequera hit .355 with two home runs, 38 RBI and 25 doubles in 46 games. He struck out only 28 times.
“He’s a good young player that provides versatility in a switch-hitting role, but more importantly it’s a much-needed rookie for that classification,” said Wild Things manager Tom Vaeth. “We look forward to seeing him compete in training camp.”
In five seasons at North Florida, Sequera batted .266 with 20 home runs and 99 RBI. He was a second-team all-Atlantic Sun pick in 2022 after hitting a career-best .307 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI.
In the NHL
Mikko Rantanen scored three goals in his native country and the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3 on Friday night in the NHL’s second visit to Europe this year.
Cale Makar had a goal and an assist, Logan O’Connor and J.T. Compher also scored and Nathan MacKinnon contributed four assists for the Avalanche, who stopped a two-game skid.
Colorado blew a three-goal lead in its previous game, a 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, and allowed Columbus to tie it after taking a 3-0 advantage this time. But Rantanen put the Avs ahead for good in the third period with his second goal.
At the Meadows
Even by his lofty standards, Friday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows was a remarkable Friday for trainer Ron Burke: seven wins, including a sweep of the day’s $15,400 co-features with Seeyou At Thebeach and In Rock We Trust. Burke lost only one race in which his horse or horses went to post.
Ronnie Wrenn, Jr. piloted five of Burke’s winners while Dave Palone steered the other two.
