1956 – Avella High School’s football team remains undefeated with a 6-0 victory over McDonald. Angelo Ferrari scores on a 15-yard run in the first quarter for the game’s only points. McDonald loses a fumble at the Avella eight-yard line in the fourth quarter.
1971 – Steve Blass pitches a three-hitter, and Bob Robertson belts a three-run homer, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the visiting Baltimore Orioles, 5-1, in Game 3 of the World Series at Three Rivers Stadium.
1979 – A snap from center from the 11-yard line sails over the Beth-Center punter’s head and out of the end zone for a safety as Washington edges the Bulldogs, 2-0.
1984 – Dragon’s Lair upsets previously undefeated Nihilator to win the final leg of the $772,500 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old colt pacers at The Meadows, clocking a world record for a 5/8-mile track with a 1:54 1/5.
1985 – Quarterback Rich Riotto passes for three touchdowns as Washington & Jefferson remains undefeated with a 35-13 victory over Hiram at College Field.
2007 -Washington High School scores on four plays of 34 yards or longer and defeats Yough 33-13 as the Little Prexies become the fourth WPIAL football program with 600 all-time wins.
2007 – Donte Valentino intercepts two passes and becomes California High School’s all-time rushing leader during the Trojans’ 27-6 win over Mapletown. Valentino rushes for 185 yards on 21 carries, giving him 4,238 career yards. He surpasses Nathan Peters’ previous school record of 4,126 yards.
2012 – Shai McKenzie carries 28 times for 295 yards and three touchdowns as Washington defeats Mount Pleasant 34-14 to clinch the Interstate Conference title.
