High school basketball: Burgettstown cruises in section opener

Despite not scoring a point in the fourth quarter, Burgettstown managed to roll to a 47-25 victory over visiting Freedom in Class 2A Section 4 opener Friday night.

Burgettstown (1-0, 3-0) took control of the game early, forging leads of 15-3 after one quarter and 34-13 at halftime.

James Leuice and Carson Tkalcevic led a balanced attack for the Blue Devils with 13 points each. Zack Schrockman followed with 11.

Freedom slipped to 0-1 in section and 0-5 overall.

Canon-McMillan 63, Bethel Park 53

Evan Morris scored a game-high 21 points, Roman Konemund made five three-point baskets and Canon-McMillan defeated Bethel Park 63-53 in a non-section game.

Canon-McMillan (2-1) led 34-32 at halftime but fell behind 44-43 at the end of the third quarter. The Big Macs then won the pivotal fourth quarter by a 20-9 scoring margin.

Koenemund finished with 17 points for the Big Macs and teammate Eamon O’Donoghue had 15.

Shawn Davis led Bethel Park (1-2) with 20 points.

Avella 57, Bentworth 53

Westley Burchianti scored 16 points, Cain Allen tossed in 14 and Avella held on for a 57-53 victory over visiting Bentworth in a non-section game.

Avella (2-2) trailed 29-25 at halftime but used a big third quarter to forge a 47-37 lead. The Eagles outscored Bentworth (1-2) by a 20-8 count in the pivotal quarter.

Lucas Burt scored a game-high 19 points for the Bearcats. Ben Hays had 12.

Carmichaels 65, California 62

Dom Colarusso poured in a game-high 32 points and Carmichaels used two big quarters to beat host California 65-62 in a non-section contest.

Carmichaels trailed 18-6 after one quarter before erupting for 45 points over the middle quarters to cut the California lead to 52-51.

The Mikes then held a 14-10 scoring edge in the key fourth quarter.

Aydan Adamson scored 17 points for the Mikes.

Jaquese Derns had 20 points to lead the Trojans’ attack. Vinny Manzella and Jacob Ziolecki each had 13.

Albert Gallatin 66, Ringgold 56

Albert Gallatin built an early 10-point lead and stayed in front the rest of the way in defeating host Ringgold, 66-56, in a non-section game on Thursday.

Mykel Belt scored a game-high 18 points for the Colonials (2-2).

Albert Gallatin led 19-9 after the first quarter but the Rams (1-2) fought to within 29-25 at halftime. The Colonials maintained their lead throughout the third quarter and were up 49-43 heading into the final quarter.

J.J. Jackson (13), Blake White (11) and Tyrone Burton (10) also hit double digits for Albert Gallatin.

Aidan Angotti and Keyshawn Goggins both scored 16 points for Ringgold and Daryle Tolliver added 12 points.

Girls results

Ellis School 49, Avella 23

Avella played without its full roster for the second consecutive night and the Eagles lost at the Ellis School, 49-23, in non-section play Friday.

Ellis School (31-) led 20-1 after one quarter as the Eagles were down to six players for the game.

Taelor Spencer and Selah Cyrus each tallied 10 points for Ellis.

Mariah Stritzinger had eight points to lead Avella.

Waynesburg 80, Frazier 14

Kaley Rohanna led a group of four Raiders in double figures with a game-high 21 points in an 80-14 non-section win over visiting Frazier on Thursday night.

Waynesburg exploded for 40 points in the first quarter and cruised home from there.

Peyton Cowell added 14 points for the Raiders (4-0) who also got 11 points from Avery Davis and 10 from Emma Kindervater.

Allie Youch had 10 points for Frazier (2-2).

Brownsville 43, Beth-Center 28:

Ava Clark led all scorers with 20 points as Brownsville defeated host Beth-center 42-28 in a non-section game Thursday.

Skyler Gates added 16 points for Brownsville (4-1).

Violet Trump totaled nine points and 10 rebounds for B-C (2-2).
