California runs over Jeannette
CALIFORNIA — Spencer Petrucci scored four touchdowns, including three in the second quarter, as California rolled to an impressive 44-6 victory over Jeannette in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs Friday night.
California (10-1), the No. 6 seed, remains undefeated against Class A competition. The Trojans advance to the quarterfinals next weekend against third-seeded Bishop Canevin.
Jake Layhue gave California 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a six-yard touchdown run.
The Trojans then pulled away in the second quarter. Petrucci had TD runs covering 3, 44 and 10 yards as the Trojans opned up a 28-0 lead at halftime.
After Jeannette (7-4) scored on a 43-yard pass from Payton Molter to Noah Sanders to open the second-half scoring, it was all California from that point.
Petrucci retuned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown and Layhue scored for the second time, on a seven-yard jaunt late in the third quarter to close the scoring.
Petrucci rushed for 181 yards on 20 carries and Layhue added 145 on 18 attempts.
