Waynesburg’s Cawley breaks school’s single-game rushing record

Waynesburg sophomore Zayne Cawley broke the program’s single-game rushing record in the Yellow Jackets’ 35-26 victory Saturday at Bethany.
Cawley gained 336 yards on 41 carries and scored four touchdowns. Robert Heller previously held the record when he rushed 312 yards against Westminster in 2007.
A blocked punt set up Cawley’s first score in the opening quarter on a 43-yard run with 11:55 left in the period.
The Bison (0-9, 0-9) cut to within one on an interception return for a touchdown before Cawley scored again from two yards out. Cawley had 78 yads on the seven-play drive for a 14-6 advantage.
Bethany kicked a field goal and Waynesburg (2-7, 2-7) had a 14-9 lead at halftime.
Cawley scored on a 21-yard run in the third quarter for a nine-point advantage before the Bison scored on back-to-back possessions to take a 26-21 lead.
Charleroi graduate Dakota Romantino pulled in a touchdown reception from eight yards out and Cawley capped the scored on a nine-yard run.
Washington & Jefferson 45, Geneva 7: Jacob Pugh three threw touchdown passes, including two to John Peduzzi and the Presidents rolled to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference win at Geneva.
Albert Gallatin graduate Bruno Fabrycki returned an interception for a touchdown as W&J improved to 7-2 in conference and overall play. The Presidents wrap up their regular season at Cameron Stadium against Waynesburg this upcoming Saturday.
Peters Township graduate Jacob Macosko pulled in an 11-yard touchdown reception from Pugh in the first play of the second quarter.
Monessen native Brandon Brown intercepted a pass in the end zone as Geneva (4-5, 4-5) was attempting to score a second touchdown with the game winding down.
Bentworth’s Owen Petrisek gained a team-high 67 yards and Peduzzi had 94 yards receiving.
California 34, Gannon 17: The Vulcans’ rushing attack was key in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West victory over Gannon in Erie.
California improved to 7-2 this season and finished second in league play with a 6-1 mark.
The Vulcans rushed for 250 yards on 44 carries and three touchdowns. Eric McKan III had 86 yards on 11 carries and Isaiah Cameron added 48 yards on five attempts.
Freshman Bobby Boyd Jr. scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to increase his team’s lead to 21-10. Boyd rushed for a team-high 100 yards on 18 carries.
California quarterback Davis Black passed for 200 yards after completing 12 passes on 22 attempts with a touchdown and interception.
The Vulcans close their regular season next Saturday at East Stroudsburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
