Soccer roundup: Bryce comes up Large for Charleroi
The Charleroi boys soccer team spent much of its PIAA Class A first-round match Tuesday against Richland peppering the Rams’ goalkeeper with shots.
Charleroi, however, could get only one shot into the net during regulation and it was going to take two to win.
The Cougars finally got that important goal when Bryce Large scored in overtime to give Charleroi a 2-1 win in the match played in Johnstown.
The victory sends Charleroi (20-1) into the quarterfinals Saturday against District 3 runner-up Tulpehocken (20-2), who edged District 5 champion Conemaugh Township, 1-0.
Charleroi dominated the first half, holding a 14-2 edge in shots. The only goal in the half was by the Cougars’ Arlo McIntyre, who took a cross pass in the box and put a shot into the net.
Richland (13-5-1) tied the score at 34:27 of the second half on a goal by Logan Tedrow before Large scored the game-winner in overtime.
South Fayette, 2-0
South Fayette is playing its best soccer at the right time of the year.
The Lions, despite being the third-place team in its section, rolled to the WPIAL Class 3A championship and then blanked Kennard-Dale 2-0 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs Tuesday night.
The game was played on South Fayette’s home turf. The Lions improve their record to 14-4-3. South Fayette has won five straight in the postseason after ending the regular season with two losses.
Senior James Casillo gave South Fayette the only goal it would need and Mike Plasko drove home a shot to make it 2-0.
Kennard-Dale, the third-place finisher in District 3, ends its season with a 16-3-1 record.
