Name: Matt Sieg

School: Fort Cherry

Class: Sophomore

Sport: Football

Sieg’s week: The Rangers quarterback had a hand in all seven of his team’s touchdowns in a 48-41 victory over Bishop Canevin on Saturday in a Class A Black Hills Conference thriller at Dormont Stadium.

Sieg was 5 of 7 for 172 yards and threw three touchdown passes, in addition to rushing for 277 yards on 26 carries and scoring four times.

“We knew we had to keep firing,” Sieg said. “The starters haven’t played a full four quarters yet this season, but I thought we handled it well. The whole team knew what they had to do.

“It was definitely a team effort and we wanted to get some revenge after they beat us last year. Bishop Canevin is a fast team and very hard to contain. We may see them again in the playoffs, but now we just have to focus on our next game.”

He cuts – and eats – the mustard: Sieg was beginning to suffer from cramps as the game against the Crusaders wore on, and the remedy was mustard.

“I had never heard of that before,” said Sieg referring to the mustard he consumed. “Someone went to the concession stand and got a cup of mustard. It was disgusting but it worked. I had heard of pickle juice being used when someone is cramping. Our trainer swears by mustard and pickle juice when you have cramps.”

The offers keep on coming: The college offers have been coming in for Sieg, though he is not even old enough to drive. He received an offer from Penn State last week and Nebraska on Monday. Another Pennsylvania team came Tuesday when Pitt offered Sieg a scholarship.

Sieg is gaining plenty of attention to play football, but he is weighing his options as to what sport he wants to play in college.

“I definitely love football, but baseball is also very important to me, and I am open to playing that sport in college,” Sieg said. “I still have some time to decide. I also play basketball and run track, but I am not really competing in those sports to get to the next level. I just enjoy doing them. Track really helps with my speed.”

More than sports: Education is a top priority in the Sieg household with both parents working as teachers, but that doesn’t stop him from having a little bit of fun.

“My parents make sure I do well in school and keep me grounded,” Sieg said. “I don’t really have any hobbies because sports are my hobbies. When I do get some time, my dad and I will sit down and watch sports on TV. Of course, it is always fun to play a little backyard football.”
