MONESSEN — Monessen scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and stopped a two-point conversion by Carmichaels with less than four minutes remaining to edge the Mikes 14-13 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game Friday night.

Monessen (1-3, 2-5) grabbed a 14-0 lead in the second quarter as Rodney Johnson had a one-yard scoring plunge and Lorenzo Gardner caught a 21-yard TD pass from Dennis Hawkins. The scores came less than two minutes apart.

Carmichaels closed to within 14-7 early in the third quarter when the Mikes blocked a Monessen punt and Gage Kundly returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

The Mikes’ Luke Donaldson scored on a five-yard run with 3:15 remaining to make it 14-13, but the Mikes’ potential game-winning two-point conversion run was stopped short of the end zone.
