Undefeated Charleroi is top seed in Class A soccer playoffs

The Charleroi boys finished the soccer season as the only undefeated team in Class A, and the Cougars’ record was rewarded with the top seed in the WPIAL playoffs.

Charleroi (16-0) opens the playoffs at home Saturday when the Cougars host Beaver County Christian (6-8-1) at 1 p.m.

Beth-Center (11-6) is on the road Saturday at Thomas Jefferson for its Class A first-round match against fourth-seeded Seton-La Salle (12-2-1). Bentworth (14-2-0), the No. 7 seed, will play at South Fayette against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (10-5-2) in a 3 p.m. match.

Three other boys teams open play Saturday in Class 3A. South Fayette (10-2-3) will be at home against Latrobe (13-3) with a 1 p.m. start in a Nos. 8-9 matchup. The Ringgold boys Rams (11-5-1) travel to Moon (14-3-1). Trinity (10-5-1) has a tough draw as the Hillers play at second-seeded Hampton (13-2-1) with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Belle Vernon (14-2) hosts East Allegheny (11-4-1) Monday in Class 2A boys and McGuffey (12-6) travels to fourth-seeded Avonworth (14-2-1) with both matches starting at 7 p.m.

The Class 4A boys tournament has only eight teams and doews not start until Saturday, Oct. 28. Peters Township (12-3-1) is the No. 6 seed and will play at Butler (13-2-3). Canon-McMillan (10-6-1) is the No. 7 seed and plays at second-seeded North Allegheny (13-1-3).

The only other local teams that received top-3 seeds are in girls competition. Peters Township (13-1-2) is the No. 3 seed in the eight-team Class 4A playoffs that begin Thursday, oct. 26. The Indians will host Fox Chapel (10-4-2). Canon-McMillan (8-6-2) is the No. 5 seed in the $A girls bracket and will open at Seneca Valley (13-2-1).

The Charleroi girls are seeded third in Class A. The Cougars (14-1-0) host Riverside Tuesday at 7 p.m.Chartiers-Houston (13-3) is the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Eden Christian (8-5-1) Tuesday at 7 p.m. Waynesburg (11-4) is on the road, playing Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (9-4) at Avonworth at 6 p.m. The raiders are the No. 10 seed.

In Class 3A girls, South Fayette (10-4-2) is seeded fifth and will hosy Penn-Trafford (11-6) Monday at 7 p.m.
