College basketball: Surging Presidents upset PAC leader

The late-season surge by the Washington & Jefferson men’s basketball team continued late Wednesday night with its best win of the season, a 92-89 overtime victory against Presidents’ Athletic Conference leader Geneva at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.

W&J (7-10, 8-14) outscored Geneva (16-2, 20-3) by a 14-11 margin in the overtime. The Presidents had forced OT by overcoming a 42-34 halftime deficit.

Alex Acost5a had a game for W&J, making 12 of 13 shots and scoring a game-high 30 points.

Nick Gearhart followed with 17 points, Brandon Jakiela had 14 and Matthew Carte 12.

Ryan Rachic led Geneva with 25 points.

The victory was the sixth in the past seven games for the Presidents.

California 100, Seton Hill 93

California shared the basketball, protected it, had six players score in double figures and won at Seton Hill, 100-93, in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday night.

Cal (13-3, 19-3) shot a blistering 56 percent from the field, made 13 three-point shots, had 22 assists and had only three turnovers.

K.J. McCLurg led Cal’s balanced attack with 21 points and Zyan Collins scored 20. Collins had five of the Vulcans three-point field goals.

Keith Palek came off the bench to score 18 points, Bryson Lucas scored 17 and Jermaine Hall tossed in 12.

Cal used a late 15-3 run to seize a 94-82 lead with 59 seconds remaining.
