Small college basketball: Loutsion, W&J women rally for 12th straight win

Double-digit scoring efforts by Stellanie Loutsion and Jaden Wan helped the Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team roar back in the second half for a 60-52 road win over Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

The win was the 12th straight for the Presidents. W&J improves to 21-2 overall and 17-1 in the PAC. A third-straight loss drops Saint Vincent to 11-12 overall and 9-9 in conference.

Loutsion finished with a team-high 15 points. She was an efficient 4-of-7 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point range and made all five of her free-throw attempts.

Wan scored all 10 of her points over the final 10:36. Trailing by as many as 10 points in the third quarter, the Presidents finished the quarter by scoring seven-straight points. Wan made a three-pointer with just 36 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 38-36.

That run spilled over into the fourth quarter as W&J, following up a layup by Saint Vincent on its first possession of the period, ripped off six straight points to gain its first lead since the second quarter. A driving layup by Wan tied the score at 40-40. W&J took the lead moments later when Wan and Loutsion made back-to-back three-pointers to give W&J a 48-42 lead with 5:44 to play. The Presidents led by multiple scores the rest of the way.

California 72, Slippery Rock 53

California used a solid defensive effort and a balanced offense for a 72-53 victory over Slippery Rock in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.

Redshirt senior Dejah Terrell scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting and six-of-six from the free-throw line for her eighth 20-point game of the year. She also collected nine rebounds, blocke done shot and had one steal.

Freshman Kimata Williams a season high with 11 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.

Cal scored a pair of baskets in the final minute of the first half to take a 35-31 lead. The Vulcans posted nine unanswered points midway through the third quarter for a 48-36 lead. Cal secured the win with a 17-2 run that opened a 69-44 lead.

Chatham 87, Waynesburg 72

Ashlie Louden poured in a game-high 26 points and made seven of Chatham’s 16 three-point field goals as the Cougars defeated visiting Waynesburg 87-72 in a PAC contest.

Chatham (17-2, 21-3), which remained one game out of first place in the conference, led 40-28 at halftime and then pulled away by 7 making seven three-point shots during the third quarter, which ended with the Cougars leading 72-49.

Mia Henkins led Waynesburg (3-15, 4-19) with 17 points, including five three-point field goals. Kalista Friday followed with 13 points, Tori Wesolowski had 12 and Marley Wolf 11.

Men’s results

California 80, Slippery Rock 69

Sophomore K.J. McClurg set a career high with 36 points, including his 1,000th collegiate point, as California defeated Slippery Rock 80-69 in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.

The Vulcans improve to 20-3 overall and 14-3 record in league play. The Rock falls to 11-11 overall, 9-7.

McClurg has six games with at least 30 points this season.

Redshirt sophomore Bryson Lucas scored 10 points, had four rebounds, five assists, two blocks and four steals. Jermaine Hall added 11 points and five steals.

Slippery Rock scored the final seven points of the first half to cut Cal’s lead to 33-30. The Vulcans scored nine unanswered points early in the second half to take a 44-32 lead and pulled away with a 13-3 run that stretched the lead to 60-42.

Saint Vincent 87, Wash & Jeff 84

Saint Vincent scored the first 10 points of the game and put together a wire-to-wire 87-84 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson College in a PAC game.

The Presidents trailed by eight points with 3:01 to play and closed the game on a 31-14 run but fell short in their comeback efforts.

The loss drops the Presidents to 7-11 in the PAC and 8-15 overall. Saint Vincent improves to 15-3 in the conference and 20-3 overall.

With his 18 points W&J’s Nick Gearhart became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Alex Acosta led the Presidents with a game-high 21 points.Matt Seidl put in 13 points.

Chatham 87, Waynesburg 65

Simon Boyer scored 25 points and made seven of Chatham’s 12 three-point field goals as the Cougars defeated visiting Waynesburg 87-65 in a PAC game.

Diaun Pinkett added 19 points and Elijah Sutton contributed 17 for Chatham (13-5, 16-8), which shot 58 percent from the field in the first half and led 49-31 at halftime. Chatham closed the half on a 38-21 run.

Waynesburg (9-9, 12-11) had only one player score in double figures. Jordan McLoyd led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points.
