Small college basketball: W&J women win 13th straight

Adalynn Cherry had 15 points and seven rebounds, sparking Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team clinched at least a share of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a 60-53 win at Grove City on Wednesday night.

The win was the 13th in a row for W&J (18-1, 22-2). The Presidents had a battle from Grove City (10-9, 11-13) as W&J led by only 27-24 at halftime but pulled away in the pivotal third quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 18-13.

W&J stayed in front by making all 10 of its free throws in the fourth quarter and 18 of 21 in the game.

Stellanie Loutsion continued her strong play in the second half of the season by scoring 12 points to go with three rebounds and three steals.

Meghan Dryburgh had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Kat Goetz led Grove City in scoring with 16 points. The Wolverines made only two of 23 three-point attempts.

W&J has a one-game lead over second-place Chatham (17-2, 21-3) in the conference standings with one game remaining. The Presidents host Allegheny on Saturday.

California 84, Clarion 53

Sierra Bermudez led five California players in double figures with 16 points as the Vulcans rolled over visiting Clarion 84-53 in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.

Iyahnna Williams scored 15 points, Alicia Young had 13, Dejah Terrell finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Allycia Harris scored 10 for the Vulcans (12-6, 17-7), who have won three straight.

Cal forced 19 Clarion turnovers and outrebounded the Golden Eagles 53-29.

Clarion’s Autumn Taylor scored a game-high 18 points.

Waynesburg 88, Franciscan 47

Mia Henkins and Kara McFadden each scored 15 points and combined to make 10 of Waynesburg’s 18 three-point field goals as the Yellow Jackets routed host Franciscan 88-47 in a PAC game.

Waynesburg (4-15, 5-19), which snapped a seven-game losing streak, made 18 of 27 three-pointers and shot 57 percent from the field.

Jules Mohrbacher was the only other Yellow Jackets player in double figures. She had 10 points.

Waynesburg had 14 players score at least two points.

Men’s results

California 95, Clarion 66

K.J. McClurg scored a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds as California, ranked No. 14 in Division II, pulled away in the second half for a 95-66 win over Clarion in the PSAC West.

Cal (15-3, 21-3) led by only 37-29 at halftime but scored 58 points in the second half.

Zyan Collins and Donald Whitehead each scored 17 points for the Vulcans.

Waynesburg 84, Franciscan 80

Jaylen Davis scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Waynesburg held on for an 84-80 road win over Franciscan in a PAC game.

Waynesburg improves to 10-9 in the conference and 13-11 overall.

The game was close throughout with Waynesburg leading 43-37 at halftime and moving out to its largest lead at 66-57 with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Franciscan battled back and closed to within 81-80 with 11 seconds to play. Waynesburg then made one of two free throws and Franciscan missed a potential game-winning three-pointer from the left wing.

Antone Baker and Korey Mitchum each scored 19 points for Waynesburg.

Grove City 80, Wash & Jeff 75

Chase Yarberough scored a game-high 28 points, including a clutch three-point basket in the final minute, leading Grove City to an 80-75 win over visiting Washington & Jefferson in a PAC game.

Grove City led 76-75 before Yarberough made a three with 34 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game. It was Yarberough’s fifth three-pointer of the night.

W&J (7-12, 8-16) had a balanced attack, getting 15 points apiece from Matthew Carte and Nathan Plotner, and 14 each from Alex Acosta and J.R. Mazza.
