KANSAS CITY, Mo. – California sophomore guard KJ McClurg was named an All-American on Tuesday, becoming the Vulcans’ first National Association of Basketball Coaches All-American since 2001.
McClurg, from Morgantown, W.Va., is the fifth NABC All-American in program history, joining Kenny Toomer (1992), Ray Gutierrez (1993) and Seth Martin (2000-01). He also is the first player at Cal to accomplish the feat during their sophomore season. McClurg was one of 16 standouts in NCAA Division II chosen to the NABC All-America Team.
McClurg compiled a tremendous offensive campaign while helping the Vulcans match their second-winningest season in program history. He became only the third player in school history to score at least 700 points in a single season. McClurg finished eighth in the country in scoring at 22.6 points per game and his 745 total points sit as the fourth-most in NCAA Division II.
McClurg was incredibly efficient this season, as he was one of only three players in the country to average 20 points per game while shooting at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line. He finished sixth in the nation with a school record 211 free throws made while converting 83.1 percent from the stripe.
McClurg scored in double-digits in all 33 games, finished with at least 20 points 20 times and had six 30-point games. He scored his 1,000th point at Cal in only 56 games.
Last month, McClurg became the first Cal player in two decades to be chosen the PSAC West Player of the Year.
