Crawford fills in for Ross in Leopards’ section victory

Lily Crawford filled in admirably for senior star pitcher Talia Ross in Belle Vernon’s 12-2 victory over Laurel Highlands in Class 4A Section 2 softball play on Saturday.
The game was played at James Weir Stadium because of inclement weather during the week.
Crawford allowed two earned runs on seven hits over six innings to earn the pitching victory.
The Leopards may have to play the rest of the season without Ross, who ruptured her Achilles’ tendon during practice on Wednesday.
Crawford received plenty of support from her teammates, as Belle Vernon (1-0, 6-0) three runs apiece in the first, third and fifth innings, two in the sixth and one in the fourth.
Maddie Grisnik had two doubles for the Leopards. Taylor Beech and Katie Sokol also doubled, and Mailey Hayes hit a home run for the defending WPIAL Class 4A champions.
South Fayette 13, New Castle 5
Maddie Cavenaugh hit two home runs and drove in three runs as the Lions defeated the Red Hurricanes 13-5 in Class 5A Section 3.
Winning pitcher Emma Earley hits a solo home run in the first inning. Earley had seven strikeouts and walked one.
South Fayette’s Came Valentino, Julia Munkittrick, Liv Bonacci and McKenna Galish doubled. The Lions (1-0, 3-0) scored six runs on six hits in the seventh to blow the game open. Brenna Dunn tripled for South Fayette.
Rockcastle County (Ky.) 8, Burgettstown 1
Rockcastle County used a five-run second inning to top Burgettstown 8-1 in the Ripken Experience at Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
Rockcastle scored its five runs in the second with two outs. Rockcastle worked three walks to load the bases and extended its lead to 4-0 on Lauren Hensley’s triple.
Hensley scored on Makayla Hester’s single for a 5-0 advantage and Hester scored on Kylee Fletcher’s triple.
The Blue Devils scored their run in the fourth when Andi Midler tripled and scored.
Baseball
Mt. Pleasant 13, McGuffey 2
The Vikings scored nine runs in the fourth to take control in a 13-2 Class 3A Section 4 victory over the Highlanders at Mt. Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant’s Dane Firmstone and CJ Nester doubled, and teammate Brady Poole tripled.
Reno Preston had two hits, including a double, to lead McGuffey (2-1, 2-2). Brogan Meighen had one RBI for the Highlanders.
