High school softball: Peters Township holds off Trinity

Peters Township built a lead with two big innings, then held off a late charge by host Trinity for a 10-9 victory in a Class 5A Section 4 game Monday night.

The Indians (1-0, 4-3) scored five times in the fourth inning and added four more in the fifth to open a 9-4 lead.

Trinity (0-1, 4-2) rallied and pulled to within 9-8 in the sixth. PT tacked on an key insurance run in the top of the seventh, and Trinity closed back to within one run in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out solo homer by Remmie Seitz but could not generate another baserunner.

Skylar Lemansky homered for PT and Makenzie Morgan had three singles, two runs and two RBI.

Hanna Suhoski homered, Emily Hasson doubled and drove in three, and Cassidy Arthur doubled for the Hillers.

Carmichaels 15, California 0

Carmichaels’ Bailey Barnyak threw a four-inning no-hitter as the Mikes rolled to a 15-0 win over visiting California in a Class A Section 2 game.

Barnyak struck out nine and walked two as the Mikes won their section opener and improved to 4-1 overall.

Carmichaels took advantage of 13 walks by California pitching and combined them with eight hits, including doubles by Kaitlyn Waggett and Carys McConnell. Barnyak went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBI.

Chartiers-Houston 15, Avella 0

Chartiers-Houston’s Meadow Ferri matched the outing by Carmichaels’ Barnyak by throwing a four-inning no-hitter, and Ella Richey hit a pair of home runs in the Bucs’ 15-0 victory over visiting Avella in Class A Section 2.

Ferri walked two and struck out nine.

Richey went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs and three RBI to go with the two round-trippers, leading the Bucs’ 16-hit attack. Seanna Riggle doubled and tripled, and Mackenzie Sumar and Sydney English each had a double. English drove in three runs.

Chartiers-Houston is 1-0 in section and 3-1 overall.

Washington 3, Fort Cherry 1

Washington scored three runs in the top of the first inning and defeated Fort Cherry 3-1 in Class 2A Section 3.

It was the first win of the season for Wash High (1-1, 1-2). Fort Cherry is 0-2, 0-3.

Winning pitcher Mackenzie Patterson had 10 strikeouts in tossing the first five innings. Aniya Glendenning recorded a save with five strikeouts over two innings of relief.

Zkyiah Hines had a double and Simone Ivery went 3-for-4 for the Prexies.

Mars 7, South Fayette 2

Mars scored five runs over the final three innings to beat host South Fayette 7-2 in Class 5A Section 3.

It was the first loss for South Fayette (1-1, 3-1), which hurt its cause by committing four errors that led to four unearned runs for Mars (1-1, 2-6).

South Fayette was held to five hits by Mars pitcher Gabrielle Rapport. Maddie Cavenaugh had a double for the Lions.

Laura Craska hit a two-run inside-the-park homer in the first inning for Mars.

Elizabeth Forward 10, Belle Vernon 0

Elizabeth Forward’s Julia Johnson homered, doubled and drove in five runs, and winning pitcher Shelby Telegdy fired a shutout as the Warriors blanked Belle Vernon 10-0 in six innings in Class 4A Section 2.

The win keeps EF (2-0, 4-0) undefeated. Belle Vernon (1-1, 6-1), which has been playing without injured pitcher Talia Ross, suffered its first setback.

Telegdy struck out nine and walked only one.
