High school softball: Perfect games for Bentworth’s Gonglik, Carmichaels’ Barnyak

Freshman Sydney Gonglik is quickly establishing herself as a dominant pitcher in the WPIAL, and Bentworth put together another dominant all-around performance Wednesday.

Gonglik fired a five-inning perfect game and Bentworth defeated visiting Burgettstown 11-0 in Class 2A Section 3.

Bentworth leads the section with a 3-0 record (5-2 overall).

Gonglik struck out 12 and the Bearcats supported their pitcher with 13 hits, including seven that went for extra bases. Gonglik and Nora Lindley each had a home run and double, and Zoie McDonald, Jordan Johnson and Willow Eckels doubled. McDonald had a team-high three RBI.

Carmichaels 15, Avella 0

Bailey Barnyak tossed a perfect game as Carmichaels defeated host Avella 15-0 in Class A Section 2.

Barynayk struck out 10 and was supported by a 14-hit attack. Carys McConnell homered and drove in five runs, Ali Jacobs tripled and Megan Voithofer had four RBI to lead the offense for the Mikes (2-0, 5-1).

Trinity 5, Upper St. Clair 1

Two Trinity pitchers combined on a four-hitter and Alexa Zawacki, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup, drove in two runs as the Hillers defeated visiting Upper St. Clair 5-1 in Class 5A Section 4.

Maddie Ray started in the circle for Trinity (1-1, 5-2) and allowed only an unearned run over 3⅔ innings. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Emma Starr twirled the final 3⅔ innings, allowing just one hit.

Charleroi 14, Washington 2

Emma Stefanick and Kaylee Sypolt combined for five hits, including three doubles, winning pitcher Lyla Brunner struck out nine and Charleroi defeated Washington 14-2 in a five-inning Class A Section 3 game.

Charleroi led 4-1 before scoring six times in the third.

Stefanick went 3-for-3 with two doubles, Sypolt was 2-for-3 with a double, and Maddie Lancy laced a double for the Cougars (2-1, 5-1).

Zkyiah Hines had a double and a triple for Wash High (1-3, 1-4) and Faith Partozoti had a double.

Chartiers-Houston 10, West Greene 0

Meadow Ferri fired a two-hit shutout, hit a home run and drove in three as Chartiers-Houston blanked host West Greene, 10-0 in five innings, in Class A Section 2.

The Bucs (3-0, 5-1) scored four runs in the first inning and five in the fourth.

Taryne Drilak smacked a three-run homer, Lauren Rush doubled and Ella Richey scored three runs.

Payton Gilbert had a double for West Greene (1-1, 2-3).

McGuffey 1, Brownsville 0

Makenna Crothers fired a three-hit shutout and Kaylee Ward drove in the game’s only run as McGuffey blanked Brownsville 1-0 in Class 3A Section 4.

Crothers walked three and struck out six as she held Brownsville (1-1, 2-3) to three singles.

McGuffey scored in the fourth inning. Three singles loaded the bases and Ward hit a one-out sacrifice fly that chased home Nicole Klages with the only run of the afternoon.

The win makes McGuffey 1-1 in section and 4-2 overall.

Canon-McMillan 21, Baldwin 3

McKenna Severin hit a grand slam, Kiersten Williams homered and doubled, and Morgan Doyle had three hits and scored three runs as Canon-McMillan crushed host Baldwin, 21-3, in five innings in Class 6A Section 1.

The Big Macs (3-1, 3-1) had 19 hits as Baldwin dropped to 0-4, 1-5.

South Fayette 13, Moon 2

South Fayette scored seven runs over the final two innings to beat visiting Moon 13-2 in a six-inning Class 5A Section 3 game.

Cam Valentino went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBI to lead the Lions (2-1, 4-1). MaKenna Galish also contributed a double and triple with two RBI.

South Park 4, Waynesburg 0

Sydney Sekely fired a three-hit shutout as South Park defeated visiting Waynesburg 4-0 in Class 3A Section 4.

The first-place Eagles (3-0, 6-1) led 2-0 before getting two runs in the sixth inning, which gave Sekely, who did not walk a batter and struck out 16, some margin for error.

Gina Tedrow struck out nine for Waynesburg (0-1, 2-5).

Jefferson-Morgan 16, California 6

Winning pitcher Kayla Larkin homered and doubled as Jefferson-Morgan defeated visiting California 16-6 in a five-inning Class A Section 2 contest.

Emilee Bazzoli also had a double for J-M (1-1, 1-3).

Bethel Park 11, Peters Township 1

Becky Gillenberger hit two doubles and drove in three runs as Bethel Park defeated Peters Township 11-1 in six innings in Class 5A Section 4.

Two Bethel Park pitchers limited PT (1-1, 4-4) to four hits, which included a double by Skylar Lemansky.
