Fort Cherry sweeps Chartiers-Houston invite

Fort Cherry swept the boys and girls teams scores Saturday at the Chartiers-Houston Invitational.
The Rangers’ Ava Menzies was the girls track MVP. She won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.94.
Fort Cherry won the girls 3,200-meter relay in 10:31.73. Emily Frankovich won the 3,200 meter-run in 12:20.31. Teammate Brooke Cornali won the high jump with a leap of 5-0.
On the boys side, the Rangers won the 4×100-meter relay in 44.04, and Lou Ryan and Jonah Pfender were victorious in the discus and shot put. Ryan won the discus (117-5) and Pfender the shot put (46-2). Doald Feigley won the 300 hurdles in 43.28.
Burgettstown’s Zack Schrockman won the boys track & field MVP with victories in the 400-meter dash (52.68) and high jump (6-4).
The Blue Devils’ Peyton Mermon was the girls track & field MVP aftering earning triumphs in the 400-meter dash (1:00.74) and javelin (116-2).
Teammate Miley Constant was the girls field MVP after winning the shot put (32-3.25) and discus (94-3).
Amelia Brose secured two first-place finishes for the host team in winning the 100-high hurdles in 16.91 and the 300-intermediate hurdles in 49.18.
Washington’s Dane Asbury won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.32. Asbury was fourth in the state last year in the 100.
California’s Fred Sherman won the boys javelin in 136-10. McGuffey won the boys 3,200-meter relay in 9:12.35
Trinity Christian’s Caleb Schmidt was the boys track MVP and Brentwood’s Daysaun Spencer was the boys field MVP.
TSTCA Invitational
South Fayette’s Olivia Renk won the 100 and 200 at the annual invitational, which was hosted by West Mifflin High School.
Renk broke the tape in the 100 in a time of 12.93 and won the 200 in a season-best time of 25.16.
Teammates Delaney Schumaker (15.76) and Evabella Cox (15.91) were the top-two finishers in the 100-meter high hurdles. Schumacher won the 300 hurdles in 45.15.
The Lions’ Alaa-Eddine Guetari won the boys 800-meter run in 1:59.69. Teammate Michael Gimigliano won the 300 hurdles in 40.06.
Peters Township’s Grace Senneway (11:07.39) and Sydney Shock (11:31.30) went 1-2 in the girls 3,200-meter run.
Belle Vernon’s Lily Shahan won the javelin with a throw of 126-10.
Trinity’s Kaylee Foringer was sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:21.47.
The boys 3,200-meter relay team of Peter Tysiak, Mason Amos, Jack Hood and Elliott Bodart was sixth in 9:03.50 for the Hillers.
Zach Noble was fifth in the pole vault (13-1) and Andrew Durig was eighth in the discus (112-8).
High school baseball
Derek Turcheck hit a walk-off double in leading Waynesburg to a 4-3 victory over Brownsville on Saturday in Class 3A Section 4 baseball action at Waynesburg.
Turcheck had three hits and two RBI for the undefeated Raiders (4-0, 5-0). Teammate Austin Suber doubled.
C.J. Corwin earned the pitching victory.
Norwin 9, Canon-McMillan 5
Canon-McMillan dropped a 9-5 decision to Norwin in section play.
The Big Macs’ Sam Meredith was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Teammates Alex Shank and Tyson Mead had two hits, a double and an RBI apiece.
High school softball
Belle Vernon outlasted Greensburg Salem, 12-11, on Saturday in Class 4A Section 2 play.
The Leopards (3-1, 8-1) scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, two in the second and sixth, and one run piece in the first and third.
Belle Vernon’s Mia Zubovic and Gracie Sokol had three hits apiece, including two doubles. The Leopards’ Mailey Hayes and Katie Sokol doubled and had singles.
Zubovic had three RBI, Gracie and Katie Sokol and Hayes each had two RBI.
Maddie Grisnik earned the win in relief after pitching 2 ⅔ innings. She allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
