High school baseball: Avella deals Fort Cherry first loss

The number of undefeated teams in Class A Section 1 has been reduced to one after Avella scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win at Fort Cherry, 14-8, Tuesday.

The teams split the key two-game series with each winning on the opponent’s home field. Carmichaels is the lone unbeaten team remaining in the section.

Avella (5-1, 6-1) led 7-3 in the fourth inning before Fort Cherry (3-1, 5-1) battled back and tied the score at 8-8 with a four-run sixth inning.

Avella moved ahead in the seventh when Cole Jaworowski led off with a single and scored on a double by Westley Burchianti, who had fouled off four two-strike pitches before the key hit. The Eagles had four hits, two walks and took advantage of two FC errors in the inning.

Bryce Wright was the winning pitcher in relief. Chas Rush drove in four for the Eagles.

Fort Cherry’s Ryan Huey had another big game, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three runs.

Carmichaels 12, California 4

Liam Lohr had four hits, four RBI and scored four runs in Carmichaels’ 12-4 win over California in Class A Section 1 play.

Lohr doubled and had a home run. Teammate Mason Lapana also hit a homer and drove in three runs. Aydan Adamson doubled and knocked in two runs. Dom Colarusso had two hits for the Mikes (4-0, 6-0).

Carmichaels scored four runs in the first and second innings for an 8-2 lead. The Trojans (2-4, 2-7) scored two runs in the second, but only added one run apiece in the fourth and seventh innings.

Nathan Beringo had one strikeout and one walk in earning the pitching victory.

Logan Hartley doubled for California’s lone extra-base hit. Teammate Niko Georgagis had two hits.

Chartiers-Houston 15, Bentworth 5

Chartiers-Houston remained atop Class 2A Section 1 with a 15-5 victory over visiting Bentworth in five innings.

The win runs C-H’s records to 4-0 in section and 4-3 overall. The Bucs swept the two-game series.

Nico Filosi went 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI to lead C-H’s offense. Keegan Kosek went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. Luke Camden added a double.

Winning pitcher Brady Grotfredson pitched five strong innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Bentworth’s Ben Hays was 3-for-4 with a double and triple. John Scott also had a double.

Charleroi 4, Washington 3

Brock Henderson smacked a tiebreaking single in the bottom of the sixth inning that scored Dylan Klinger and Charleroi edged Washington 4-3 in Class 2A Section 1.

Charleroi (4-2, 6-3) swept the two-game series and moved ahead of Wash High (3-3, 4-4) in the section standings.

Washington scored a run on an error in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 3-3, but Henderson delivered his hit with two outs in the bottom of the inning.

Henderson, the second of three Charleroi pitchers, was the winner. Logan Usher pitched the seventh inning for a save.

Tyler O’Neil had a double for Charleroi. Wash High wa shield to two singles.

Canon-McMillan 12, Hempfield 2

Seabastian Shulsky threw a complete game as Canon-McMillan defeated Hempfield 12-2 in six innings in Class 6A Section 2.

The teams have split the first two games of the three-game series.

Shulsky fired a three-hitter with five strikeouts and had plenty of support from the C-M hitters. Cam Russell doubled and drove in four runs, Teddy Burke homered, doubled and drove in three, and Sam Meredith was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs. Kolton Smittle also doubled for the Big Macs (4-4, 4-6).

McGuffey 10, Greensburg Salem 1

Brogan Meighen threw a complete-game six-hitter and Cameron Dames hit an inside-the-park grand slam in McGuffey’s six-run first inning as the Highlanders defeated Greensburg Salem 10-1 in Class 3A Section 4.

Meighen scattered six hits and one walk. He struck out seven as McGuffey improved to 3-2 in section and 3-3 overall.

Upper St. Clair 5, Trinity 4

Cooper Stutzman scored the go-ahead run on Nico D’Orazio’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning and Upper St. Clair edged Trinity 5-4 in Class 5A Section 2.

The teams split the two-game series with each contest a one-run affair.

Trinity (3-3, 4-4) erased an early 4-1 deficit and tied the score in the fifth on an RBI single by Jonah Williamson and a sacrifice fly by Gibby Havanis.

West Greene 4, Jefferson-Morgan 1

Darren Knight took a shutout into the seventh inning as West Greene defeated host Jefferson-Morgan 4-1 in Class A Section 1.

West Greene (4-2, 4-2) swept the two-game series.

The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead into the fifth, when a Johnny Lampe single scored Knight, and West Greene tacked on two insurance runs on an error.

A double steal by J-M (0-6, 2-6) with two outs in the seventh ended Knight’s shutout bid.

Colten Thomas had a double for West Greene.

South Fayette 2, Connellsville 0

Ethan Rose fired a two-hit shutout as South Fayette defeated visiting Connellsville 2-0 in Class 5A Section 2.

The teams split a two-game series.

Rose struck out six and did not issue a walk. He limited the Falcons (3-3, 5-6) to two singles.

Chaz Kosko’s RBI single in the second inning gave South Fayette (4-2, 5-2) the only run it would need. Gino Satira added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Mapletown 10, Frazier 0

A.J. Vanata pitched 4⅓ shutout innings and helped his cause by belting three doubles as Mapletown defeated visiting Frazier 10-0 in a five-inning non-section game.

The win snapped a six-game skid for Mapletown (2-6).

Vanata and reliever Spencer Yeager held Frazier (4-5) to one hit.

Roger Gradek, Jeremiah Mick and Carson Vanata each had one double for Mapletown.

Belle Vernon 8, Laurel Highlands 0

Colton Lee and Alex Nash combined on a four-hit shutout as Belle Vernon blanked host Laurel Highlands 8-0 to sweep the two-game series in Class 4A Section 2.

Belle Vernon is 4-0 in the section and 7-1 overall.

Lee pitched five innings and struck out 11. Nash tossed two hitless innings of relief.

The Leopards’ Lucas Judy drove in two runs and Cole Matusik had two hits, including a double.
