High school softball: Burgettstown gets section win

Layla Sherman hit two doubles and drove in three runs, powering Burgettstown to an 11-6 win over Washington Class 2A Section 3 on Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Brooklyn Robinson doubled and drove in two runs and Andi Midler also doubled.

Burgettstown (2-3, 3-6) did most of its damage early, scoring nine times in the first three innings.

Faith Partozoti had a triple and Teyler Barnes connected on three singles for Wash High (1-5, 1-6).

Monessen 18, Bishop Canevin 2

Monessen moved above the .500 mark in Class A Section 3 with an 18-2 victory in three innings over winless Bishop Canevin.

Grace Clingenpeel drove in four runs and Joey Hurst was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI to lead the Greyhounds (2-1, 2-2). Hurst was the winning pitcher. She struck out seven.

Mapletown 12, Avella 10

Mapletown held off a late charge by Avella for a 12-10 win in Class A Section 2 play.

The Maples’ Alexis Perry and Marly Seward doubled. Devan Clark earned the victory after recording 11 strikeouts and walking one.

Mapletown (2-1, 2-3) scored one run in the first inning, and four in the second and third frames for a 9-0 lead. The Eagles (0-3, 3-4) scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-5.

The Maples added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Avella scored five in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to one. Mapletown added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.

Brownsville 1, Waynesburg 0

Waynesburg played its second 1-0 game in as many days, but this time came out on the wrong end of a decision at Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.

Ava Clark fired a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts for Brownsville (2-2, 3-4). The Falcons scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch.

Waynesburg’s Gina Tedrow twirled a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. Ellie Makel had a double for the Raiders (1-2, 3-6).

Thomas Jefferson 12, Peters Township 0

Peters Township’s defense broke down in a 12-0 five-inning loss to Thomas Jefferson in Class 5A Section 4.

The Indians (1-3, 4-6) committed six errors that led to nine unearned runs for TJ (3-1, 5-3). The Jaguars did most of their damage late, scoring 10 times over the final two innings.

Emerson Gatten had a triple and Lili Giulianelli doubled for PT.

West Allegheny 11, South Fayette 9, 9 innings

West Allegheny stormed back from an early four-run deficit and beat host South Fayette 11-9 in nine innings in Class 5A Section 3.

West Allegheny (3-0, 9-1) trailed 5-1 after one inning and rebound to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the seventh. South Fayette (3-2, 5-2) forced extra innings on Brenna Dunn’s steal of home in the bottom of the seventh.

Aubrey Police’s RBI single in the 11th scored Averi Zdinak with the go-ahead run in the 11th.

MaKenna Galish went 4-for-5 with a double for South Fayette.

OLSH 6, Charleroi 4

Our Lady of Sacred Heart rallied for a 6-4 win in eight innings over Charleroi in Class 2A Section 3 action.

The Cougars (3-2, 6-2) had a 4-1 lead after six innings before OLSH (4-0, 6-2) scored three in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Charleroi’s Kaylee Sypolt was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. The Cougars’ Riley Jones was 3-for-3.

Sofia Celaschi took the loss, but had 12 strikeouts and walked two.
