Waynesburg jumps out to big lead, hangs on for victory

Waynesburg, the last undefeated local team, forged an early seven-run lead and then had to fight off a late rally by Greensburg Salem to defeat the Lions, 12-9, in Class 3A Section 4.
Waynesburg is 6-0 in the section and 7-0 overall. The Raiders have a one-game lead over Mount Pleasant in the section standings.
Alex VanSickle went 2-for-3 with a double and scored three times for the Raiders. Ethan Kiger had three singles and drove in a pair, and Trenton Zupper tripled and scored twice.
Three Waynesburg pitchers combined on a seven-hitter.
Fort Cherry 9, Carmichaels 5
Fort Cherry scored seven runs over the first three innings and went on to a victory over host Carmichaels and a sweep of the key two-game series in Class A Section 1.
Leadoff hitter Ryan Huey went 4-for-4 with a home run, double and five RBI for Fort Cherry (5-1, 7-1). Matt Sieg had three hits, including a home run, and drove in a pair of runs.
Winning pitcher Blake Sweder allowed three hits in five innings.
Ambrose Adamson hit a two-run homer for Carmichaels (4-2, 6-2).
Avella 19, Mapletown 3
Avella scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a win in four innings over Mapletown in Class A Section 1.
Cam Ullom drove in five runs and Isaiah Bradick was 3-for-3 for Avella (6-1, 7-1), which sits in first place in the section by a half-game over second-place Fort Cherry.
Jefferson-Morgan 1, California 0
John Woodward and Brock Bayles combined on a four-hit shutout as Jefferson-Morgan blanked host California in nine innings in Class A Section 1.
The only run of the game came in the top of the ninth when Brenton Barnhart, who hit a one-out single, scored from first base on a California error.
California (2-5, 2-8) put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but Bayles, who threw three shutout innings of relief, got a strikeout to end the game.
Jefferson-Morgan (1-6, 3-6) had eight hits, including a triple by Deakyn DeHoet. Woodward allowed two hits and two walks, and struck out 13, over six innings but did not get a decision.
Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 2
Lucas Judy pitched a complete game and Belle Vernon did all of its scoring in the final two innings to win at Ringgold in Class 4A Section 2.
The teams split the two-game series.
Ringgold (1-5, 3-7) led 2-0 after five innings, but Belle Vernon (5-1, 8-2) scored one time in the sixth and pushed four runs across in the seventh. Cole Matusik had a tiebreaking RBI single.
Judy scattered eight hits. He struck out three and walked two. A double by the Leopards’ Adam LaCarte was the only extra-base hit in the game.
Ringgold is 1-5 in section and 4-7 overall.
Bentworth 5, Frazier 2
Lucas Burt and Ben Hays had key RBI singles in the top of the seventh inning as Bentworth completed a two-game series sweep of Frazier in Class 2A Section 1.
Winning pitcher Samuel Wade threw a three-hit complete game for Bentworth (2-6, 2-7). The Bearcats led 3-2 before getting two runs in the top of the seventh.
Seneca Valley 13, South Fayette 2
Seneca Valley was a winner over host South Fayette in a non-section game. The loss leaves South Fayette with a 5-3 overall. record.
Nick Parrotto threw a two-hit complete game for Seneca Valley (6-4-1).
Penn-Trafford 8, Trinity 6
Penn-Trafford scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a win over host Trinity in a non-section game.
Trinity (4-5) led 5-4 entering the seventh. The Hillers got a two-out RBI single by Gibby Havanis in the bottom of the seventh but a double play in the inning proved costly.
