High school baseball: West Greene edges section leader

West Greene jumped out to a four-run lead after two innings and held on for an 8-7 victory over first-place Fort Cherry in Tuesday’s Class A Section 1 baseball game at Fort Cherry.
The Pioneers’ Darren Knight had six strikeouts and walked four in earning the pitching win. Knight also hit a home run.
The Rangers (6-2, 8-2) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after scoring one run in the third and third in the fourth.
West Greene (5-3, 6-3) regained the lead with a three-spot in the fifth for a 7-4 lead. Fort Cherry cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the frame before the Pioneers scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the seventh.
Matt Sieg struck out 13 and walked two but took the pitching loss. He had two doubles. Teammate Dylan Lueck doubled. The Rangers’ Ben Demascal hit a home run.
Waynesburg 7, Southmoreland 0
Starter Trenton Zupper and reliever Austin Surber combined on a no-hitter and Kory Taylor drove in three runs as Waynesburg remained undefeated with a 7-0 win over host Southmoreland in Class 3A Section 4.
The win runs Waynesburg’s record to 8-0 in section and 10-0 overall.
Zupper struck out six but walked five over 5⅔ innings. Surber got the final four outs, three via strikeout as Southmoreland fell to 2-8, 2-10.
Alex VanSickle and Derek Turchek each had three hits for the Raiders and Surber doubled and scored twice.
Canon-McMillan 10, Baldwin 0
M.J. Maurschak pitched a complete-game shutout in Canon-McMillan’s 10-0 victory over Baldwin in Class 6A Section 2.
Maurschak had six strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. Teammate Alex Shank hit a solo home run and knocked in two runs.
C-M’s Sam Meredith had two doubles.
The Big Macs improved to 6-5 in section play and 6-7 overall.
Carmichaels 6, Avella 2
Aydan Adamson pitched a complete game in Carmichaels’ 6-2 victory over Avella in Class A Section 1.
The Mikes (6-2, 8-2) swept the season series over the Eagles (6-3, 7-3).
Braydon Andrews doubled for Carmichaels’ lone extra-base hit.
Avella’s Brayden Fuller doubled and Isaiah Bradick tripled.
N John Woodward struck out seven and doubled in Jefferson-Morgan’s 10-0 win over Mapletown in Class A Section 1.
The Rockets (3-6, 5-6) scored five runs in the third and four in the fourth.
N Chartiers-Houston used a six-run second and seven-run fourth on its way to a 16-2 win over Washington in Class 2A Section 1.
The Bucs’ Brady Gotfredson allowed two earned runs on five hits in five innings.
Chartiers-Houston’s Justus Buckingham doubled and teammate Aaron Walsh had two hits and two RBI. Anthony Romano homered and drove in three for the Bucs (6-1, 6-4).
Var Chandler had two hits, including a double for the Prexies (4-4, 6-6).
Ringgold 3, Laurel Highlands 0
Ringgold’s Jimmy Nash pitched a complete-game shutout in the Rams’ 3-0 win over Laurel Highlands in Class 4A Section 2.
Nash allowed three hits, all singles, with five strikeouts and four walks. Ringgold’s Gavin Angotti had four hits and two RBI. He was a home run shy of the cycle with two doubles, a triple and single. Spencer Behrendt tripled.
The Rams improved to 3-5 in section and 5-7 overall.
Trinity 15, South Fayette 5
Trinity exploded for eight runs in the seventh inning to defeat South Fayette 15-5 in Class 5A Section 2.
The Hillers’ Gibson Havanis had four hits, including two doubles, and five RBI. Teammate Matthew Robaugh hit a home run and drove in four.
Kaden Hathaway was the winning pitcher for Trinity (5-3, 6-5).
The Lions’ Gino Satira and Tyler Skeen doubled. South Fayette is 4-4 in section and 5-5 overall.
Charleroi 2, Frazier 1
Charleroi scored two runs in the first inning and the pitching of Jake Beveridge and Kaden Woods held down Frazier in the Cougars’ 2-1 win in Class 2A Section 1.
Tyler O’Neil had an RBI double in the first for Charleroi (6-2, 8-3). Teammate Jackson Keranko also doubled.
McGuffey 13, Brownsville 2
McGuffey scored 10 runs in the fourth and cruised to a 13-2 triumph over Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.
Lincoln Johnson doubled for the Highlanders (5-3, 5-4). Ryan Keith had five strikeouts and walked six, but only allowed two earned runs on two hits over five innings.
