High school softball: Carmichels’ Barnyak strongarms West Greene

Bailey Barnyak had 10 strikeouts in leading Carmichaels to a 7-3 win over West Greene in Class A Section 2 on Tuesday.

The Mikes’ Ali Jacobs had two doubles and Carys McConnell also doubled.

Payton Gilbert doubled for the Pioneers (5-2, 6-4). West Greene’s McKenna Tharp had two hits.

Carmichaels’ Kaitlyn Waggett had four hits and two RBI.

The Mikes improved to 4-1 in section play and 7-2 overall.

Charleroi 9, Burgettstown 6

Charleroi scored five runs in the first inning and went on to a 9-6 victory over visiting Burgettstown in Class 2A Section 3.

The wins keep Charleroi (6-2, 9-2) within striking distance of first place in the section. The Cougars have a key game today at first-place Bentworth.

Winning pitcher Sofia Celaschi had a two-run double in Charleroi’s first inning. Lyla Brunner drove in two runs and combined with Celaschi on the pitching win. Celaschi struck out seven over five innings and Brunner fanned four over the final two innings.

Burgettstown (3-4, 4-7) scored three times in the fifth to close to within 6-5. Layla Sherman went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two RBI, Madelina Guiddy smacked two doubles and Brooklyn Robinson drove in a pair.

McGuffey 5, Waynesburg 2

Julia Barr went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Makenna Crothers allowed only two unearned runs as McGuffey defeated visiting Waynesburg 5-2 in a Class 3A Section 4 contest.

McGuffey (4-2, 7-3), currently sits in second place in the section. The Highlanders scored one run in the first inning and two more in the third for an early 3-0 lead. Crothers, who struck out four and did not issue a walk, held Waynesburg (4-3, 6-7) the rest of the way.

The Raiders’ Gina Tedrow struck out 12.

California 4, Avella 2

Kera Urick threw a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts as California picked up its first win of the season, 4-2, over visiting Avella in Class A Section 2.

Urick also tripled and scored twice for the Trojans (1-7, 1-9).

North Allegheny 7, Canon-McMillan 3

McKenna Rowlands homered and Olivia Carlson drove in three runs, powering North Allegheny to a 7-3 win over visiting Canon-McMillan in Class 6A Section 1.

NA (7-3, 7-3) won despite solo home runs by Canon-McMillan’s Olivia Ford and Kiersten Williams.

NA’s Carlyn Vaupel had a double and triple.

Bentworth 16, Fort Cherry 0

Sydney Gonglik struck out 17 and allowed one hit in Bentworth’s 16-0 win over Fort Cherry on Monday in Class 2A Section 3.

The Bearcats (7-0, 9-2) were led offensively by Sofia Gaussa, Nora Lindley and Kyleigh Glaze, who all had doubles. Gaussa and Lindley were both 3-for-4.
