High school baseball: Bethel Park tops Trinity in section showdown

Bethel Park moved into sole possession of first place in Class 5A Section 2 with a 10-1 victory over visiting Trinity on Monday.

Bethel Park (6-3, 8-5-1) led by only 2-0 before breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning and tacking on three more runs in the sixth.

Four different players had two RBI each for the Black Hawks.

Winning pitcher Santino Diulus allowed only three hits and one run over six innings. The one run was a solo homer by Matthew Robaugh for Trinity (5-4, 7-6).

South Fayette 3, Upper St. Clair 0

Ethan Rose threw a four-hit shutout as South Fayette blanked Upper St. Clair, 3-0, in Class 5A Section 2.

South Fayette (5-4, 6-5) scored two runs in the first inning and that was all the support Rose needed. He struck out six and walked one.

Adam Caye had a two-run single for South Fayette and Tyler Schepis hit a double.

Central Catholic 9, Canon-McMillan 5

Adam Sarkis doubled and drove in three runs as Central Catholic defeated Canon-McMillan 9-5 in Class 6A Section 2.

Central Catholic (5-8, 8-9) used a pair of three-run innings to hold off Canon-Mac (7-6, 7-8). The second three-run inning came after the Big Macs closed to within 6-5 in the fifth.

Canon-McMillan, which outhit Central Catholic 12-10, received two doubles from Teddy Burke. Colin Yeager and Cam Russell also doubled.

Yough 6, McGuffey 4

Yough scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a two-run, tiebreaking single by Tyler Burkett, to beat visiting McGuffey 6-4 in Class 3A Section 4.

Yough (5-4, 5-8), which boosted its playoff chances, led 3-2 early before McGuffey took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Ryan Keith, one of his three hits in the game.

McGuffey is 5-4 in section and 5-6 overall.

West Greene 3, Carmichaels 2

West Greene scored three runs in the third inning and pitchers Darren Knight and Lane Allison made sure they were enough as the Pioneers held off Carmichaels 3-2 in a key Class A Section 1 game.

The Pioneers and Mikes, who play again today in Carmichaels, are tied in the section with 6-3 records.

Johnny Lampe hit an RBI single in the third inning that gave West Greene a 2-1 lead and a Carmichaels error on the play allowed another run to score. That proved to be important when Carmichaels pushed across a run in the seventh on a one-out single by Mason Lapana.

Allison, who earned a save, got a strikeout and flyout to end the game as the Mikes stranded the tying run at third base.

Avella 11, California 2

Isaiah Bradick went 3-for-3 with a double and seven RBI, powering Avella to an 11-2 victory over visiting California in Class A Section 1.

Winning pitcher Bryce Wright worked into the seventh inning and struck out 14 as the Eagles improved to 8-2 in the section and 8-4 overall. The Eagles currently have the most league wins in the section.

Westley Burchianti had a double and Chas Rush drove in three runs.

California (2-7, 3-11) was held to four hits.

Fort Cherry 16, Mapletown 3

Fort Cherry took advantage of 11 Mapletown errors to defeat the Maples 16-3 in Class A Section 1.

The win keeps Fort Cherry (7-2, 9-2) in the middle of the race for the section title.

Matt Sieg hit a solo home run and Ben Demascal had a double and four RBI to lead the Rangers’ attack. Winning pitcher Colton Temple allowed three unearned runs and struck out nine.

Mapletown remains winless in the section.

Burgettstown 11, Washington 0

Burgettstown drew seven walks in an 11-0 victory over Washington in Class 2A Section 1.

The Blue Devils’ Eric Kovach had nine strikeouts and walked one in five innings. He pitched a three-hit shutout in the mercy-rule game.

Jacob McNabb had four hits for Burgettstown, including a double, and three RBI. Carson Thalcevic and James Leuice had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils (6-1, 6-3).

Chartiers-Houston 13, Frazier 3

Justus Buckingham went 2-for-2 with a double and five RBI, sparking Chartiers-Houston to a 13-3 win at Frazier in a five-inning Class 2A Section 1 game.

Winning pitcher Dom Cumer allowed one unearned run over four innings. Luke Camden had a double for the Bucs (7-2, 7-7), who are battling Burgettstown for the top spot in the section.

Bentworth 1, Beth-Center 0

Starter Lucas Burt and reliever Jacob Burt combined on a no-hitter as Bentworth edged visiting Beth-Center 1-0 in Class 2A Section 1.

Lucas Burt went five innings, striking out 11 and walking five. Jacob Burt got the final six outs and struck out four.

Bentworth (3-8, 3-9) scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Sam Wade’s one-out single scored Lucas Burt.

Three Beth-Center (3-6, 7-8) pitchers held Bentworth to four hits.

Ringgold 12, Albert Gallatin 0

Tyler Fisher threw a one-hitter and Ringgold rolled to a 12-0 win in five innings over Albert Gallatin in Class 4A Section 2.

Fisher walked one and struck out two as Ringgold moved to 4-5 in section and 6-8 overall as the Rams fight for a playoff berth.

Eddie Frizzell drove in three runs, Alex Kolano and Spencer Behrendt each doubled for the Rams.

Southmoreland 6, Jefferson-Morgan 4

Brenden Geho drew a tiebreaking bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning, sending Southmoreland to a 6-4 win over host Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section contest.

The score was tied 4-4 entering the fifth but Geho’s walk and and RBI single by Tyler Kolonosky gave the Scotties a 6-4 lead.

Three Southmoreland pitchers held J-M (6-7) scoreless over the final five innings.

Deakyn Dehoet, Jaymison Robinson and Joey Bair doubled for the Rockets.

Cornell 18, Monessen 0

Cornell scored 12 runs in the third and final inning and defeated host Monessen 18-0 in Class A Section 3.

C.L. Jackson drove in four runs for the Raiders.
