High school softball: Zawacki, Trinity have grand time in win

Alexa Zawacki went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI, powering Trinity Trinity to a 9-2 win at Bethel Park in a key Class 5A Section 4 game Monday.

The win leaves Trinity (6-3, 10-4) a half-game behind first-place Connellsville. Bethel Park falls to 5-5, 7-8.

Bethel Park led 1-0 before Zawacki’s grand slam to center field put the Hillers ahead 4-1 and they led the rest of the way. Hanna Suhoski, Maddie Ray and Nina Christy each had a double.

Ray and Finley Hohn combined on a five-hitter. The Hillers did not allow an earned run.

South Fayette 10, Western Beaver 2

Brenna Dunn hit two home runs and drove in five, powering South Fayette to a 10-2 victory over Western Beaver in Class 5A Section 3.

The win by second-place South Fayette (7-2, 10-2) sets up a key game for the section lead Wednesday at West Allegheny.

Dunn hit two of the Lions’ Liv Bonacci and winning pitcher Stephanie Binek also homered. Maddie Cavenaugh had a double.

Losing pitcher Emma Bogacki struck out 10.

Canon-McMillan 1, Butler 0

Pitchers Lyla Mowery and Brooke Bumer combined on a five-hit shutout and an error on a bunt in the fourth inning led to the game’s only run as Canon-McMillan blanked Butler 1-0 in Class 6A Section 1.

Mowery pitched four innings, scattering five hits and striking out three. Bumer pitched one-hit ball over the final three innings with four strikeouts.

C-M is 5-7 in section. Butler dropped to 2-10.

Carmichaels 2, West Greene 0

Bailey Barnyak fired a two-hit shutout and Sydney Miller hit an RBI double as Carmichaels edged West Greene 2-0 in Class A Section 2.

Barnyak, who struck out six, had a perfect game for 5⅓ innings before a single by Ella Scott.

Carmichaels is 7-1 in section and 10-2 overall. West Greene is 6-4, 7-6.

Chartiers-Houston 18, Mapletown 0

Ella Richey went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI, powering Class A Section 2 leader Chartiers-Houston to an 18-0 win over Mapletown in four innings.

Lauren Rush also hit a home run for the Bucs (9-0, 11-1). She went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Richey and Rush also had a double, as did Zaylee Fonner. The Bucs scored nine runs in the first inning.

McGuffey 3, Keystone Oaks 2

Julia Barr’s double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Faith Ealy and Nicole Klages, giving McGuffey a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Keystone Oaks in Class 3A Section 4.

The Highlanders had to rally because KO (2-7, 5-8) scored twice in the second inning and took a 2-1 lead into the seventh.

Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers struck out seven and allowed only two unearned runs. She also hit a double as McGuffey moved to 5-2 in the section and 8-3 overall.

Seton LaSalle 2, Waynesburg 1

Kiara Cerminara hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Gianna Ferrieri pitched a two-hitter as Seton LaSalle edged Waynesburg 2-1 in Class 3A Section 4.

There were only four hits in the game with Cerminara’s the most important. Waynesburg pitcher Gina Tedrow matched Ferrieri by throwing a two-hitter. She struck out 11.

Dani Stockdale had a double for Waynesburg (4-6, 6-10).

Bentworth 15, Beth-Center 0

Sydney Gonglik fired another no-hitter and had a big day at the plate as Bentworth defeated Beth-Center 15-0 in four innings in Class 2A Section 3.

Gonglik struck out 11 and did not issue a walk. At the plate, she went 4-for-4 with a home run, two triples, four runs and three RBI from the leadoff spot.

Sofia Gaussa smacked two doubles and scored three times, Nora Lindley added a double and three RBI and Kyleigh Glaze had a double as Bentworth improved to 10-0 in section and 12-2 overall.

OLSH 4, Charleroi 3

Julia Pinter hit a walk-off two-run homer with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Our Lady of the Sacred Heart a 4-3 win over Charleroi in Class 2A Section 3.

Pinter finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Ariahna Blouse had a big game for Charleroi, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Kaylee Sypolt, Madalynn Lancy and losing pitcher Sofia Celaschi each doubled for the Cougars. Celashi struck out 10.

OLSH (7-1, 9-3) remains on the heels of Bentworth in the section standings. Charleroi is 6-4, 9-4.

Belle Vernon 10, Albert Gallatin 3

Belle Vernon turned a one-run deficit into a seven-run victory in a 10-3 win over Albert Gallatin in Class 4A Section 2.

The Leopards (7-4, 12-4) scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Gracie Sokol had three hits, two doubles, and Bella Williams had three RBI for Belle Vernon. Sydney Stark doubled and had two RBI for the visitors.

Mya Glisan doubled and had two RBI for the Colonials.

Connellsville 5, Peters Township 2

Iris Burd pitched a five-hitter as Connellsville defeated host Peters Township 5-2 in Class 5A Section 4.

Connellsville is 7-3 in section and 11-5 overall.

Kirra Davis had a double and drove in two runs for the Falcons.

Avella 11, California 10

Avella scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 11-10 come-from-behind victory over California in Class A Section 2.

Avella trailed 10-1 in the third inning but battled back and took the lead in the sixth when a single by Emma Johnson drove in Haleigh Rush.

Rush had a triple and winning pitcher Avery Rado doubled for Avella.
