Makenna Crothers fired a five-hit shutout and won a fantastic pitchers’ duel with Waynesburg’s Gina Tedrow as the Highlanders edged the Raiders 1-0 in Class 3A Section 4 on Tuesday.
McGuffey, which is firmly in second place in the section, improves to 6-2 in the league and 9-3 overall.
Crothers struck out and did not walk a batter.
Tedrow threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. She walked two.
McGuffey scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Faith Ealy led off with a walk, stole second base and came around to score on two groundouts.
Adin Snider had two hits for Waynesburg (4-6, 6-10).
Seneca Valley 10, Canon-McMillan 6
Neve Miler homered, doubled and drove in three runs, pitcher Lexie Hames struck out 12 and undefeated Seneca Valley defeated Canon-McMillan 10-6 in Class A Section 1.
The key to the game was a five-run third inning by Seneca Valley (13-0, 16-0), which gave the Raiders a 6-3 lead.
Kiersten Williams hit a solo home run for Canon-McMillan (5-8, 5-8) and Morgan Doyle had three singles.
West Greene 17, St. Joseph 2
West Greene crushed host St. Joseph 17-2 in three innings in non-section play.
Payton Gilbert hit two doubles and drove in four runs. Ali Goodwin went 3-for-3, and Emmaline Breazell and Madelyn Roberts each had a double. Winning pitcher Sammi Zimmerman struck out give and notched her first career victory.
West Greene is 8-6 overall.
Jefferson-Morgan 13, Mapletown 3
Jefferson-Morgan clinched a WPIAL playoff berth out of Class A Section 2 with a 13-3 win at Mapletown. No game details were reported.
Chartiers-Houston 7, California 0
Class A Section 2 leader Chartiers-Houston won by forfeit, 7-0, over California.
