South Fayette overcame an extremely slow start to defeat McKeesport 49-41 in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 5A girls basketball playoffs on Tuesday night at Peters Township High School.

The Lions (17-8) have advanced to the WPIAL championship finals for the third straight year. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Petersen Events Center.

South Fayette avenged an earlier-season loss to the Tigers (20-4).

The Lions didn’t score until three minutes left in the first quarter, but they also held McKeesport down in the second period for a 22-15 halftime lead.

The Tigers outscored South Fayette, 7-2, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-22 heading into the final frame.

The Lions had a 25-19 edge in the fourth to earn another trip to the University of Pittsburgh. South Fayette won the WPIAL title last season and was second in the state.

Juliette Leroux scored 16 points for the Lions. Teammate Haylie Lamonde added 13.

McKeesport’s Rachel Manfredo led the game in scoring with 18 points.
