Errett breaks career steals record in Rangers’ win

Derek Errett passed Fort Cherry great Wade Timmerson in career steals as the Rangers topped Riverview, 75-58, on Sunday in the MLK Showcase at Neighborhood Academy.

Errett, who was named to the all-tournament team, had a game-high 26 points, needed five steals to pass Timmerson, who had 165 in his career. Errett recorded seven for 167. He had a double-double with 10 rebounds and had five assists from his position at point guard.

Teammate Shane Cornali added 20 points.

The Rangers (4-0, 9-4) had a 23-7 lead after the first quarter. Riverview cut into the deficit with a 20-18 edge in the second and a 15-12 advantage in the third, but Fort Cherry outscored Riverview, 22-16, in the fourth.

The Belle Vernon girls pulled away in the third quarter for a 56-33 non-section victory Saturday over South Allegheny.

Monessen 47, Westinghouse 26

The Greyhounds had a 20-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 47-26 triumph over Westinghouse in the MLK Showcase at Neighborhood Academy on Sunday.

Monessen was led in scoring by Na’Jaziah Carter, who had 10 points.

Alaya Worth led Westinghouse in scoring with seven points.

The Greyhounds improved to 7-3.

Belle Vernon 56, South Allegheny 33

The Leopards were never in trouble as they downed South Allegheny, 56-33, in non-section play on Saturday.

Belle Vernon had a six-point halftime lead and a 20-6 advantage in the third period.

The Leopards’ Kenzi Seliga scored a game-high 16 points. Teammate Caroline Lee had nine rebounds.

Belle Vernon improved to 7-7.

Amina Shea and Emily Beaumont scored six points apiece for the Gladiators (4-10).

Charleroi 62, California 47

The Cougars were never in danger as they defeated the Trojans, 62-47 in non-section play.

Charleroi’s Bella Carroto had a game-high 27 points. Teammates Ella Sypolt (13) and Riley Jones (10) were also in double figures.

California (5-5) was led in scoring by Hayley Gibson, who had 22 points.

The Cougars improved to 6-7.

Eden Christian Academy 50, West Greene 27

Eden Christian Academy shut down the Pioneers’ offense in a 50-27 non-section victory.

West Greene (3-8) was led in scoring by Kasey Meek, who put in 13 points.

Eden Christian’s Hope Haring had a game-high 21 points. Teammate Emmie Smith scored 12.
