High school softball: McGuffey walks it off

Kaylee Ward’s double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Katie Grimm and gave McGuffey a 3-2 walk-off victory over South Allegheny in non-section play Thursday.

The Highlanders (2-1) trailed 2-1 entering the seventh. Nicole Klages drew a leadoff walk and scored on Grimm’s one-out RBI double that tied the game. Ward followed with her game-winning hit.

Winning pitcher Makenna Crothers allowed four hits. She struck out nine and walked four.

Grimm finished with two doubles. Klages and Maura Janovich also doubled.

* Avella scored four times in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth for a 10-6 come-from-behind win over visiting Fort Cherry.

Winning pitcher Avery Rado went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Avella, which trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the fifth. Heather Rish also had three hits. Sydney Strope hit a two-run double that gave Avella the lead for good.

Mylee Johnson had a double and three RBI for Fort Cherry. Maddie Farner also doubled.

* Lakeland Regional of Virginia erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and defeated Peters Township 13-5 in Orlando, Fla.

The Indians led 5-2 entering the fifth inning. Avery Carson went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Indians.

* Weirton Madonna scored seven runs in the fourth inning and won a slugfest over Burgettstown, 11-9.

Raya Sentipal had a big game for the Blue Devils with three hits, three runs, a home run, a double and two stolen bases.

Brooklyn Robinson, Emma McGregor and Jaidan Gilbert also had doubles among Burgettstown’s 14 hits.

* Bentworth freshman Sydney Gonglik had 13 strikeouts in her high school pitching debut as the Bearcats rolled to a 9-3 victory over Beech High School at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

Gonglik didn’t walk a batter and yielded one earned run on two hits over seven innings.

Beech had a 2-0 lead after the third inning, but Bentworth scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the seventh.

Zoie McDonald tripled for the Bearcats. Teammates Sofia Gaussa, Kyleigh Glaze and Nora Lindley had two hits apiece.
