High school baseball: Avella pitching strongarms West Greene

Avella scored two runs in the second inning, and starting pitcher Bryce Wright and reliever Brian Martos made sure they were enough as the Eagles won their Class A Section 1 opener, 3-1, over visiting West Greene on Monday.

Wright struck out eight over five innings and Martos earned a save with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Eagles (1-0, 2-0) took a 2-1 lead in the second, getting RBI singles by Brayden Fuller and Cam Ullom.

West Greene’s Hayden Hamilton threw a complete-game five-hitter and allowed only one earned run.

* Dom Colarusso scored from first base on a double to right field by Robbie Wilson-Jones in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving Carmichaels a 7-6 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in the Class A Section 1 opener.

Jefferson-Morgan (0-1, 2-1) led 6-0 in the third inning but Carmichaels (1-0, 2-0) forced extra innings by scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth.

Wilson-Jones was the winning pitcher with four innings of shutout relief.

Liam Lohr and Bryadon Andrews doubled for Carmichaels, which was held to four hits by two J-M pitchers.

The Rockets’ Deakyn Dehoet had a big game, going 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and a double. Drew Adams and John Woodward also doubled.

* Waynesburg used two big innings to win at Greensburg Salem 10-3 in the Class 3A Section 4 opener.

The Raiders (1-0, 2-0) scored four times in the top of the first inning and fives in the fourth.

Winning pitcher Ty Groves took a shutout into the seventh. He allowed three hits over 6⅔ innings.

Waynesburg’s Austin Surber had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double. Derek Turcheck drove in three runs.

* Jackson Nopwaskey drove in three runs and struck out 11 over six innings, and reliever Ethan Varesko pitched out of a jam in the seventh inning as Beth-Center defeated Frazier 6-2 in the Class 2A Section 1 opener.

Beth-Center (1-0, 2-1) led 5-0 entering the seventh but Frazier (0-1, 0-1) scored twice and had runners on second and third with one out. Varesko was brought in to pitch and ended the game with two strikeouts.

Nopwaskey allowed only one hit.

* South Fayette pitcher Ethan Rose had a memorable game but the Lions were unable to come away with a victory.

Rose threw a complete game no-hitter but St. Viator (Ill.) defeated South Fayette 2-1 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Rose struck out 10 and walked two. South Fayette committed four errors. St. Viator took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, scoring an unearned run, taking advantage of two errors. South Fayette tied the score in the fifth, but St. Viator got another run without a hit in the sixth. An error put the go-ahead run on base, the runner moved up on defensive indifference, went to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

* California’s Caden Monticelli threw a three-inning no-hitter and California scored 14 runs in the first inning en route to a 16-0 thumping of Mapletown in Class A Section 1.

Monticelli struck out eight and walked two. At the plate, he went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Chase Cicchitto and Kaden Weston also doubled for the Trojans.

Mapletown pitchers issued eight walks and hit three batters in two innings.

* Carlynton took advantage of nine walks and five errors by Monessen to beat the Greyhounds 11-1 in five innings in a Class A Section 3 game.

Winning pitcher Dylan Sunderland threw a four-hitter and struck out 10.

Christian Williamson doubled for Monessen.

* Washington scored three runs in the sixth to break open a tie game and hung on for a 6-3 victory in Class 2A Section 1.

The Prexies’ Caleb Patton singled to center field to lead off the sixth. He moved to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error. Tyler Roberts and Wayne Sparks-Gatling scored the second and third runs on errors.

Sparks-Gatling was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and walking one in six innings.

Lucas Burt led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to cut the Bearcats’ deficit to 5-3.

Iain Callan had two hits, including a double, for Washington (1-0, 2-1).

Benjamin Hays doubled for the Bearcats (0-1, 0-2).

* Brogan Meighen pitched a five-hit shutout in leading McGuffey to a 6-0 victory over Southmoreland in Class 3A Section 4.

Meighen had nine strikeouts and one walk. He helped his own cause with a single and RBI.

McGuffey (1-0, 1-1) scored the only run it would need in the fourth on Evan Seibert’s RBI double. Cameron Dames also doubled for McGuffey and Lincoln Johnson tripled.
