Olivia Ford went 4-for-4 and Kiersten Willaims smacked a three-run homer as Canon-McMillan won its Class 6A Section 1 opener over Mt. Lebanon, 11-1, in five innings Thursday.
Winning pitcher Lyla Mowery threw a five-hitter and helped her cause with a double.
Ford hit two doubles and drove in four runs. Hailey Swope also doubled.
Waynesburg 8, Stow Munroe Falls 1
Winning pitcher Gina Tedrow went 4-for-4 with four RBI, three coming in Waynesburg’s seven-run sixth inning as the Raiders defeated Stow (Ohio) Munroe Falls 8-1 in Pigeon Creek, Tenn.
Tedrow gave Waynesburg (2-4) a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double. The score remained 1-0 until Waynesburg’s big sixth inning, which included an RBI single by Taylor Sibert and a two-run single by Dani Stockdale.
Tedrow allowed only three hits. She struck out 12 and did not issue a walk.
Belle Vernon 5, Connellsville 0
Talia Ross fired a three-hit shutout and struck out 11, powering undefeated Belle Vernon to a 5-0 win over Connellsville in a non-section game.
Belle Vernon (4-0) did all of its scoring in the fifth inning, that included Katie Sokol’s two-run homer. Taylor Beech also drove in a pair of runs. Mailey Hayes had three hits for the Leopards, including a double.
Kamera Kontrik doubled for Connellsville (4-2).
Burgettstown 12, Fort Cherry 1
Layla Sherman went 3-for-3 with four RBI as Burgettstown defeated Fort Cherry 12-1 in five innings in Class 2A Section 3.
Sherman hit a two-run homer in the first inning to get Burgettstown (1-1, 2-2) off to a strong start. Maddy Guiddy had a double and two RBI for the Blue Devils, and Sherman and winning pitcher Brooklyn Robinson also doubled.
Robinson struck out six and did not issue a walk.
Mylee Johnson had a double for Fort Cherry (0-1, 0-2).
Bentworth 15, Washington 0
Sydney Gonglik was one walk from a perfect game in leading Bentworth to a 15-0 victory over Washington in Class 2A Section 3 action.
The freshman had 12 strikeouts and one walk over four innings. The game ended after the Bearcats (1-0, 3-2) scored their 15th run, which put the mercy rule into effect.
Bentworth scored eight in the first inning and seven in the fourth. Zoie McDonald was 1-for-3 and knocked in four runs for the Bearcats. Teammate Willow Eckels was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
McGuffey 20, Mapletown 2
McGuffey scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 20-2 win in four innings over Mapletown in a non-section game.
The big first inning included home run by Mia Couture and Katie Grimm. Mackenzie Shrader also homered for the Highlanders (3-1). Sidney Dobrzynski hit two doubles, and Couture, Julia Barr, Maura Janovich and Faith Ealy each had one double. Gimm went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Ealy was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Thomas Jefferson 12, Chartiers-Houston 3
Thomas Jefferson broke open a close game by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Chartiers-Houston 12-3 in a non-section contest.
TJ (2-2) led 4-3 entering the key half-inning. The Jaguars were limited to seven hits but took advantage of eight walks, a hit batsman and four C-H errors.
Lauren Rush had a home run for the Bucs (2-1), who were held to four hits by TJ pitcher Aubrey Shaffer.
