High school softball: Bentworth wins section title outright

Nora Lindley and Zoie McDonald each drove in three runs, Sydney Gonglik struck out 14 and Bentworth defeated host Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 12-1 Monday to win the Class 2A Section 3 title outright.

The Bearcats (11-0, 13-2) scored six runs in the top of the second inning and never trailed.

Kyleigh Glaze had a double for the Bearcats.

Gonglik tossed a five-hitter and took a shutout into the sixth inning.

Carmichaels 10, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Carys McConnell went 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI as Carmichaels won at Jefferson-Morgan 10-0 to clinch a share of the Class A Section 1 title with Chartiers-Houston.

The Mikes are 11-1 in section and 14-2 overall.

McConnell and Kaitlyn Waggett each scored three times and Megan Voithofer had a double.

Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak fired a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts.

The lone hit for J-M (6-6, 6-8) was a double by freshman Ashlynn Snyder.

Beth-Center 12, Burgettstown 7

Beth-Center clinched a playoff berth from Class 2A Section 3 with a 12-7 victory at Burgettstown.

The Bulldogs (5-6, 6-6) overcame an early 3-0 deficit.

Kendall Welsh went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, Keira Lamp doubled, Emma Pohill had three hits including a double, and Bella Stepp had a two-bagger for the Bulldogs.

Freshman Raya Sentipal had a double and triple for Burgettstown (5-7, 7-11), which will clinch a playoff berth if Bentworth defeats Beth-Center in the section finale.

Pine-Richland 6, Canon-McMillan 3

Pine-Richland slipped past Canon-McMillan 6-3 in Class 6A Section 1.

Olivia Ford hit a solo home run to start the bottom of the first inning for Canon-Mac (6-10).

Emily Booher smacked a pair of doubles. Ford and Mckenna Severin also doubled.

Southmoreland 8, Belle Vernon 6

Southmoreland scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Belle Vernon 8-6 in a non-section game.

Makayla Etling homered, tripled and doubled for Southmoreland (14-2) and Maddie Brown also hit a home run.

Mia Zubovic homered and drove in three runs for Belle Vernon (13-6).

Chartiers-Houston 7, Ligonier Valley 0

Meadow Ferri went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, and pitched a three-hit shutout as Chartiers-Houston blanked Ligonier Valley 7-0 in a non-section game.

Ferri struck out 12 and did not issue a walk as the Bucs improved to 14-2 overall. She hit a double.

Lauren Rush hit a home run for C-H and leadoff hitter Ella Richey went 4-for-4 and scored three runs.

Franklin Regional 5, South Fayette 4

Toryn Fulton hit a two-run homer and Franklin Regional rallied to beat South Fayette 5-4 in a non-section game.

Emma Early hit a home run for South Fayette (10-4).

Keystone Oaks 11, Peters Township 5

Keystone Oaks used an eight-run sixth inning to beat Peters Township 11-5 in a non-section contest.

Skylar Lemansky hit a solo home run for PT (4-14).

West Greene 16, Avella 1

West Greene completed Class A Section 1 play with a 16-1 road win at Avella.

The Lady Pioneers finished in third place with an 8-4 section record (10-6 overall). Sammi Zimmerman picked up her second pitching win of the season, striking out four.

West Greene had a 19-hit outburst. Payton Gilbert had two hits including a a triple, and Emmaline Beazell was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kendra Tharp had two doubles, scored three times and drove in two. Madelyn Roberts went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Kylee Dvis was 3-for-3 including a double, a triple and three RBI.
