High school baseball: Beth-Center wins to snag playoff berth

Beth-Center used two big innings to defeat visiting Washington 11-3 Tuesday night and earn the final playoff spot out of Class 2A Section 1.

B-C (5-7, 9-9) scored four runs in the first inning, then secured the victory by scoring six times in the sixth.

Winning pitcher Jackson Nopwaskey struck out six in six innings. Jonah Sussan went 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI.

The teams split the two-game series, which means that both will be in the playoffs.

Burgettstown 9, Frazier 4

Pitchers Ethan Kovatch and Brodie Kuzior combined for five no-hit innings and Sam Elich smacked two doubles as Class 2A Section 1 champion Burgettstown extended its winning streak with a 9-4 victory over Frazier.

Kuzior and Matthew Bredel each scored twice for the Blue Devils (11-1, 11-3-1).

Fort Cherry 7, Jefferson-Morgan 2

Colton Temple hit a two-run homer and Class A Section 1 champion Fort Cherry completed a sweep of Jefferson-Morgan, defeating the Rockets, 7-2.

Temple was 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Rangers improved to 10-2 in section and 11-3 overall.Matt Sieg pitched into the sixth inning for the win.

John Woodward had a double for J-M (4-8, 6-9).

Waynesburg 8, McGuffey 6

Alex VanSickle, Derek Turcheck and Ethan Kiger — the 3-4-5 hitters in Waynesburg’s lineup — combined for six runs, Tyler Groves struck out 10 and the Raiders defeated host McGuffey 8-6 in Class 3A Section 4.

Waynesburg scored three runs in the first inning and led 8-2 before McGuffey started a comeback by scoring one run in the sixth and three more in the bottom of the seventh.

VanSickle, Grant Pack and Kory Taylor hit doubles for Waynesburg. Ryan Keith had a double for McGuffey.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Charleroi 5

Luke Camden had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Brady Gotfredson allowed only two unearned runs over five innings as Chartiers-Houston defeated Charleroi 11-5 in Class 2A Section 1.

The teams split the two-game series.

C-H (9-3, 9-8) made the most of only six hits but took advantage of nine walks and a hit batsman.

Charleroi is 7-5, 10-7.

Canon-McMillan 8, Ringgold 2

Brayden Radue and Cam Russell each homered as Canon-McMillan won at Ringgold 8-2 in a non-section contest.

The Big Macs (8-11) started fast, scoring three times in the first inning on an RBI double by Nico Patragas and Radue’s two-run homer. Patragus finished with a pair of doubles. Russell and Alex Shank also had a double.

Sam Allen had two of Ringgold’s hits and Anthony Koziel doubled.

Three C-M pitchers combined on a four-hitter.

West Greene 8, California 5

West Greene scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and two West Greene pitchers made sure they were enough as the Pioneers beat California 8-5 in Class A Section 1.

The teams split the two-games series. West Greene is playoff bound at 8-4 in section and 11-5 overall. California is 4-8, 5-13.

Morgan Kiger had a two-run double in the first inning. Hayden Hamilton also had a double. Kigers and Hamilton struck out nine and gave up 13 hits, but only two of them – doubles by Logan Hartley and Spencer Petrucci – went for extra bases.

Carmichaels 12, Mapletown 2

Mason Lapana went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs, Aydan Adamson pitched a two-hitter and Carmichaels defeated Mapletown 12-2 in six innings in Class A Section 2.

Carmichaels ends section play with an 8-4 record. The Mikes are 11-4 overall.

Carmichaels had 15 hits – all singles – including three each by Dom Colarusso and Lapana.

The only extra-base hit in the game was a two-run homer in the first inning by Mapletown’s A.J. Vanata.

Adamson struck out five and did not walk a batter.
