High school baseball: Trinity rallies, wins 11-inning thriller

Logan Daniels’ two-run single capped a three-run top of the 11th inning for Trinity as the Hillers defeated Plum 6-4 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A baseball playoffs Wednesday night at Gateway High School.
The win sends 12th-seeded Trinity (9-8) into the quarterfinals Monday against section rival Bethel Park, which received a bye.
Trinity was down to its final strike in the top of the seventh inning. The Hillers, however, rallied and forced extras by scoring two runs with two outs. A double by Jonah Williamson scored Matthew Robaugh and Cam Schofield followed with a clutch two-out, two-strike RBI single to center field that made it 3-3.
The Hillers forged ahead in the 11th. An error on a double play attempt by Plum allowed Derek Falvo, who reached base on a single, to score from second base and gave Trinity a 4-3 lead. Following two walks, Logan Daniels delivered a two-run single that made the score 6-3.
Plum pushed across one run in the bottom of the 11th.
Winning pitcher Jackson Burt allowed two hits and one run over five innings of relief.
Trinity’s only run until the seventh inning had come on a leadoff homer to right field by Falvo in the second. Trinity outhit Plum 13-5.
Fifth-seeded Plum (13-8) scored two runs in the second inning and one in the fourth.
Thomas Jefferson 11, Ringgold 3
Thomas Jefferson broke up a close game by scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and defeated Ringgold 11-3 in a Class 4A first-round game at Boyce Mayview Park.
Thomas Jefferson (18-2), the No. 2 seed, led 5-3 before its big inning.
Ringgold (8-12) led 2-0 in the second inning. The Rams scored in the top of the first on three singles, with Gavin Angotti getting the RBI hit. Micah Petrosky had a run-scoring single in the second.
TJ took a 3-2 lead in the third and never trailed again. The Jaguars had their first six hitters reach base in the sixth.
Petrosky and Andrew Sprinkle each had two hits for Ringgold.
Blackhawk 7, Belle Vernon 3
Dylan Smith pitched into the seventh inning and drove in three runs as Blackhawk upset top-seeded Belle Vernon 7-3 in a Class 4A first-round game at Boyce Mayview Park.
Blackhawk (8-10) pulled away by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Adam LaCarte, Jake Gedekoh, Parker Lind and Alex Nash each doubled for Belle Vernon (13-4).
South Fayette game suspended
South fayette’s Class 5A game against Shaler was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the first inning and will be resumed today at a site and time to be determined. The Lions lead, 1-0.
