High school basketball: C-H stays unbeaten, rings up win over Freedom

Avery Molek scored a game-high 20 points and undefeated Chartiers-Houston broke open a close game with a big third quarter en route to a 68-40 victory over Freedom in a non-section boys basketball game Wednesday night.
The Bucs (3-0) led 31-23 at halftime, then blitzed Freedom (0-4) with a 26-point third-quarter outburst.
Paul Williamson scored all seven of his points in the pivotal third quarter, and Jaiden Boone tallied seven of his nine in the period.
Nate Gregory finished the game with 12 points for C-H.
Cody Patterson led Freedom with 13 points.
McGuffey 60, Carmichaels 17
Grayson Wallace tossed in 20 points and outscored the opposition as McGuffey stymied visiting Carmichaels 60-17 in a non-section game on the Highlanders’ hardwood.
McGuffey held Carmichaels (1-2) to only two points in the second quarter and again in the fourth. McGuffey (2-1) led 13-7 after one quarter and 30-9 at halftime.
Aydan Cunningham finished with 14 points for the Highlanders.
Dom Calarusso’s six points were tops for the Mikes.
Waynesburg 64, Carmichaels 37
The Raiders led 34-20 at halftime and didn’t slow down for a 64-37 non-section victory at Carmichaels.
Alex Vansickle scored a game-high 20 points for Waynesburg. Cole Headlee and Dane Woods both scored 15 points. Dane Woods grabbed 14 rebounds and Headlee had seven assists.
Girls results
Bentworth 42, Jefferson-Morgan 26
Kayla O’Dell scored a game-high 21 points, fueling Bentworth’s attack to a 42-26 non-section victory over host Jefferson-Morgan.
The Bearcats, who won for the first time this season in three contests, were in front throughout, leading 11-4, 24-9 and 35-19 at the quarter stops.
Amber Sallee chipped in with 13 points for the winners.
Ava Wood paced J-M (1-2) with 12 points and five rebounds. Kayla Larkin grabbed nine rebounds.
South Fayette 58, USC 55, OT
Juliette Leroux scored a team-high 22 points and South Fayette outlasted visiting Upper St. Clair 58-55 in overtime on Tuesday in non-section action.
USC (1-2) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to force overtime tied at 53-53. South Fayette (2-0) outscored the Panthers 5-2 in the extra period.
Eric Hall and Lainey Yater, two key returnees from last year’s WPIAL championship team, scored 16 and 11 points, respectively.
South Fayette overcame a game-high 30 points by USC’s Rylee Kalocay. Meredith Huzjak had 11 for the Panthers.
