High school basketball: Tkalcevic scores 31; Blue Devils are 8-0

Carson Tkalcevic scored a game-high 31 points, which included seven three-point field goals, as Burgettstown remained undefeated by holding on for a 75-71 victory over visiting South Side Beaver in a Class 2A Section 4 contest.
Burgettstown (3-0, 8-0) led 40-25 at halftime and was up by as many as 20 points in the third quarter before South Side Beaver (0-1, 3-4) rallied behind a 40-point performance by Brody Almashy.
Zack Schrockman and James Leuice each scored 20 points for Burgettstown.
McGuffey 60, Leechburg 29
Grayson Wallace almost outscored McGuffey’s opponent in the Highlanders’ 60-29 road win over Leechburg in a non-section game.
Wallace poured in a game-high 27 points. He helped McGuffey build a 25-14 halftime lead and the Highlanders pulled away in the second half.
Jake Ealy also hit double figures for McGuffey, tossing in 10 points.
Jayden Floyd had 10 points to lead Leechburg.
Cameron (W.Va.) 61, West Greene 37
Despite a 23-point performance by West Greene’s Lane Allison, Cameron (W.Va.) was able to defeat the visiting Pioneers 61-37 on Friday.
The Dragon led 25-18 at halftime, and behind Colson Wichterman’s game-high 24 points, pulled away in the second half.
Charleroi 58, Waynesburg 41
Jackson Keranko scored 17 points as Charleroi defeated visiting Waynesburg 58-41 in a Class 3A Section 4 game Thursday.
Bryce Large added 12 points for Charleroi (1-1, 2-5).
Cole Headlee tied for game-high honors with 17 points for Waynesburg (0-2, 2-6).
Southmoreland 72, Ringgold 55
Noah Felentzer tossed in a game-high 30 points as undefeated Southmoreland upped its record to 7-0 with a 72-55 non-section victory over visiting Ringgold on Thursday.
Zyair Dungee topped Ringgold (2-5) in scoring with 15 points.
In other games
Canon-McMillan ended its runs in the KSA Pre-Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Fla., on Friday with a 61-38 loss to Erie McDowell. No game details were reported.
Girls results
McGuffey 57, Jeannette 26
McGuffey continued its undefeated start with a 57-26 thumping of host Jeannette in a non-section game.
The win moves McGuffey’s record to 7-0. The Highlanders have beaten six of their seven opponents by double digits.
McGuffey held 22-6 after one quarter over Jeannette (3-3) and 33-12 at halftime.
Taylor Schumacher led the way for the Highlanders with 25 points
Jeannette’s Adriana Allison scored 11 points.
The game was the second in as many days for McGuffey. Schumacher, Lexi Ewig and Madison Gaso each scored 10 points as the Highlanders in a 53-13 thumping of host Carmichaels in a non-section game Thursday.
South Side Beaver 45, Burgettstown 41
Bailey Strnisa scored a game-high 16 points and South Side Beaver fought off a second-half comeback by host Burgettstown to edge the Blue Devils 45-41 in a non-section game.
South Side (4-5) had a big first half, building a double-digit lead. Burgettstown (4-5), which has lost three in a row, almost overcame an 11-point halftime deficit. The Blue Devils closed to within 44-41 in the final minute. Burgettstown missed a two-point with about 30 seconds remaining, grabbed the offensive rebound and missed a three-pointer that would have tied the score with less than 15 seconds to play.
SSB tacked on a free throw for the final margin.
Kaitlyn Nease led the Blue Devils in scoring with 11 points.
Mapletown 33, Propel Montour 26
Mapletown used a 14-5 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to rally and beat host Propel Montour 33-26 in a non-section battle Thursday.
Propel Montour (2-6) surged to a 21-19 lead after three quarters before Mapletown charged back to earn the victory.
Emma Zalar scored nine points for the Maples (2-5).
