Burgettstown dealt first loss; WG wins Bentworth tournament
The McGuffey boys team outscored Burgettstown 11-2 in overtime for a 49-40 victory over the Blue Devils on Thursday night in the Avella tournament.
It was the first loss of the season for Burgettstown (8-1).
Aiden Cunningham and Grayson Wallace did almost all the scoring for McGuffey (5-3). Cunningham had a game-high 23 points and Wallace followed with 19.
Zack Schrockman paced Burgettstown with 17 points.
West Greene 49, Brownsville 39
West Greene held Brownsville to under 10 points in the first half and held on for a victory to win the Bentworth Tournament.
Pioneers head coach Jim Romanus believes the tournament championship was the first for the program in at least 25 years.
West Greene’s Lane Allison led the game in scoring with 20 points. Teammate Patrick Durbin added 10.
The Pioneers (5-4) had a 13-7 lead after the first quarter and a 24-9 halftime advantage. The Falcons (5-5) outscored West Greene by five in the second half.
Jefferson-Morgan 47, Mapletown 24
Jase Bedillion scored 13 points, Dayten Marion added 12 and Jefferson-Morgan won the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament by routing Mapletown, 47-24.
The Rockets (7-3) were in control early, leading 20-6 after one quarter and 32-11 at halftime.
Peters Township 80, Beaver 61
Peters Township had four players reach double figures in scoring as the Indians downed Beaver at AHN Arena.
Peters Township (5-2) had a 29-15 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage at halftime to 48-32. The Indians outscored the Bearcats (4-4) by 14 in the third quarter 71-41 lead heading into the fourth. Beaver had a 20-9 edge in the fourth.
Peters Township’s Dylan Donovan had 20 points and teammate Jack Dunbar added 14. Sean Thelk scored 11 points and Mickey Vaccarello put in 10.
The Bearcats’ Brady Mayo dropped a game-high 29 points.
Trinity 52, Canon-McMillan 45
Trinity outscored Canon-McMillan by seven in the overtime period to earn a victory in the Hillers’ tournament.
The Hillers (5-4) had an 11-4 advantage in overtime after the Big Macs (5-5) worked to tie the game at the end of regulation.
The Hillers were led in scoring by Kaden Hathaway, who put in 17 points. Dante DeRubbo and Jacob Dunkle added 10 points apiece.
Canon-McMillan’s Evan Morris was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points. Eamon O’Donoghue put in 12.
Chartiers-Houston 60, Western Beaver 38
Chartiers-Houston rallied from a four-point deficit after the first quarter to cruise past Western Beaver in the Avella tournament.
Avery Molek was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points for C-H (7-1). Justus Buckingham added 15.
Nathan Schwarz led Western Beaver (1-8) in scoring with 14 points.
Chartiers-Houston plays Fort Cherry today at 5:30 p.m.
Fort Cherry 84, Propel Montour 21
Shane Cornali scored 20 points, leading four Fort Cherry players in double figures as the Rangers rolled to an 84-21 victory over Propel Montour in the Avella tournament.
The Rangers were in charge throughout as they forged commanding leads of 27-4 after one quarter, 49-8 at halftime and 67-15 after three quarters.
Derek Errett scored 12 points for Fort Cherry (4-2). Matt Sieg and Blake Sweeder each tossed in 10 points.
Carrick 48, Bentworth 38
Ray Saunders scored 19 points and Carrick defeated Bentworth 48-38 in the consolation game of the Bearcats’ tournament.
Bentworth (1-7) led 25-20 at halftime but was outscored 28-13 in the second half.
Chris Harper scored 19 points, which included four three-pointers, and Ben Hays had 14 for Bentworth.
Beth-Center 56, Carmichaels 39
Brody Tharp and Jason Zellie combined for 30 points, sparking Beth-Center to a 56-39 win over Carmichaels in the consolation game of the Carmichaels Lions Club tournament.
The key for B-C (2-6) was the first half, when the Bulldogs built a 27-15 lead.
Santino Revi scored 10 points for B-C. Dom Colarusso led Carmichaels (3-6) with 14 points.
South Fayette 49, Johnstown 41
Gavin Orosz scored 14 points and South Fayette moved its record above the .500 mark with a 49-41 win over Johnstown in the Roundball Classic being held at the Beaver County Dome.
South Fayette (4-3) trailed 19-18 at halftime but outscored the Trojans 22-7 in the pivotal third quarter.
Michael Plasko had 12 points for the Lions.
Ringgold 59, California 39
Ringgold used a 19-point performance by Darryl Tolliver to beat California 59-39 at the Charleroi tournament.
Ringgold (3-6) also received 12 points from Aiden Angotti and 10 from Szyair Dungee.
California (0-8) was led in scoring by Caden Monticelli’s 10 points.
Avella 58, South Side Beaver 57
Avella rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to edge South Side Beaver in the Avella tournament.
The Eagles (5-3) outscored the Rams, 13-5, in the third quarter, and 16-11 in the fourth.
Westley Burchianti led Avella and the game in scoring with 22 points. He pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Cain Allen added 12 and Nate Cilia 11.
Brayden Fuller had five steals in the fourth quarter to help lead the Eagles’ defensive effort.
Andrew Corfield led South Side Beaver (3-5) in scoring with 17 points. Teammates Carter Wilson (14) and Brody Almoshy (13) were also in double digits.
Avella plays McGuffey in the championship of the tournament while the Rams face Burgettstown.

McGuffey 53, Fort Cherry 43
The Rangers had a three-point lead after the first quarter before the Highlanders came on strong the rest of the game to win the McGuffey Tournament on Thursday and remain undefeated at 9-0.
Fort Cherry (4-3) took an 11-8 lead into the second period before McGuffey outscored the Rangers, 16-11, in the second for a 24-22 edge at halftime.
The Highlanders had a 17-14 advantage in the third quarter and outscored Fort Cherry, 12-7, in the fourth.
McGuffey’s Taylor Schumacher was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points. Teammates Lexi Ewig and Libby Mallah added points apiece.
Olivia Kemp led the Rangers in scoring with 14 points. Raney Staub added 13 for Fort Cherry.
Beth-Center 59, Charleroi 48
Beth-Center built a 16-point halftime lead and went on to a 59-48 victory over Charleroi in the Christmas at the Corral held at Laurel Highlands.
Emma Shashura led the way for Beth-Center (4-4) with 22 points. K.J. McDaniel added 11 and Lauren Brown had 10. The Bulldogs led 33-17 at halftime and 42-31 after three quarters.
Bella Carroto scored a game-high 24 points for Charleroi (4-2). Riley Jones contributed 11 points.
South Fayette 40, Olentangy (Ohio) 39
Erica Hall scored 11 points and South Fayette outscored Olentangy Liberty (Ohio) 40-39 in the Lowcountry Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
The Lions (4-2) trailed 20-19 at halftime and 29 -28 after three quarters.
Big Walnut (Ohio) 47, Waynesburg 15
Waynesburg took a fall from the undefeated ranks as the Raiders were thumped by Big Walnut (Ohio) 57-15 at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Big Walnut (9-2) led 15-10 after one quarter, then held Waynesburg (8-1) to five points over the final three quarters. The Raiders trailed 25-13 at halftime then scored only two points in the second half. Big Walnut outscored Waynesburg 24-2 in the third quarter.
Remy Largent led the winners with 19 points. Kaley Rohanna, with seven points, was Waynesburg’s top scorer.
Keystone Oaks 63, Chartiers-Houston 35
Keystone Oaks defeated Chartiers-Houston 63-35 in the Burgettstown tournament.
The Eagles (8-1) had a 17-6 lead after the first quarter and increased their advantage to 38-18 at halftime. Keystone Oaks led 59-30 heading into the fourth period.
Allison Wingard led the Bucs (2-0, 5-3) with 12 points.
Bailey Rieg led the Eagles and game in scoring with 18 points.
Freedom 60, Burgettstown 37
The Bulldogs took the early lead and cruised to victory on Thursday in the Burgettstown tournament over the host team.
Kaitlyn Nease scored 13 points to lead the Blue Devils (4-7).
Freedom’s Shaye Bailey had a game-high 28 points.
South Side Beaver 59, Bentworth 27
Tournament MVP Bailey Strinisa poured in 33 points to power South Side Beaver to a 59-27 win over Bentworth in the championship game of the Bearcats’ tournament.
Amber Sallee, who made the all-tournament team along with teammate Ava Massucci, led the Bearcats (3-7) with seven points.
Ringgold 61, Propel Montour 30
Alaxa Jolly scored 16 points, sparking Ringgold to a 61-30 win over Propel Montour in the consolation game of the Bentworth tournament.
Ringgold (3-6) led 28-19 at halftime and had a strong finish to the game, outscoring Propel Montour (2-8) by a 21-3 margin in the fourth quarter.
Jada Gernot had 14 points for the Rams and Naomi McNary scored 11.
Aquinas Academy 51, Belle Vernon 16
Aquinas Academy used a big first half to defeat Belle Vernon 51-16 in the California Hoopfest being held at the Convocation Center.
Aquinas Academy (9-1) led 27-7 after one quarter and 39-11 at halftime.
Emily Fisher led a balanced attack for the winners with 12 points. Caroline Lee’s six points were tops for Belle Vernon (4-5).
Springdale 33, Jefferson-Morgan 24
Guard Ashlyn Ferderbar scored 16 points to power Springdale to a 33-24 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in the Carmichaels Lions Club’s tournament.
Springdale (3-6) trailed 8-5 after one quarter, grabbed a 14-11 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half.
Kayla Larkin scored 12 points for Jefferson-Morgan (2-8).
Avella 46, Steel Valley 36
Avella’s balanced scoring bested a one-person show by Steel Valley as the Eagles pulled out a 46-36 win in the consolation game of the McGuffey tournament.
Haleigh Rush led Avella with 16 points. Syd Strope tallied 13 and Ava Frank gave the Eagles three players in double figures as she scored 12.
Steel Valley’s Ava Caiarelli scored a game-high 22 points, which included six three-point field goals.
In other games
The Monessen boys defeated Winchester Thurston, 73-59. In girls games, Canon-McMillan held off Franklin Regional 57-54 at the California Hoopfest. Peters Township was a 64-41 winner over Livingston Academy (Tenn.) in Charleston, S.C. No game details were reported.
