High school basketball: Fort Cherry boys get section title

Fort Cherry clinched at least a share of the Class 2A Section 4 boys basketball championship Tuesday night with a 72-35 victory over visiting Carmichaels.
Fort Cherry (10-1, 15-5) led by only 33-22 at halftime but outscored Carmichaels 39-13 in the second half, including 8-0 in the fourth quarter.
The Rangers will try to win the outright section title Friday night when they play at rival Burgettstown.
Derek Errett led the Fort Cherry attack against Carmichaels by scoring a game-high 24 points. He also had seven assists. Blake Sweder was next in the scoring column with 19 points.
Ayden Adamson led Carmichaels (1-9, 4-14) with 20 points and Robbie3 Wilson-Jones finished with 10.
Burgettstown 72, Frazier 44
Zack Schrockman has enjoyed a very good season for Burgettstown and it got better Tuesday as he scored a career-high 38 points in the Blue Devils’ 72-44 thumping of visiting Frazier in Class 2A Section 4.
The win improves Burgettstown to 9-2 in section and 15-5 overall. The Blue Devils play Friday at home against Fort Cherry with a chance to gain a share of the section title.
Against Frazier (5-6, 10-11), Burgettstown took charge from the outset, leading 27-13 after one quarter and 48-23 at halftime.
Carson Tkalcevic also scored in double figures for Burgettstown. He had 12 points.
Peters Township 76, Trinity 39
Dylan Donovan led four Peters Township players in double figures with 18 points and the Indians made 11 three-point baskets en route to a 76-39 victory over visiting Trinity in Class 5A Section 1.
The Indians (6-2, 14-5) led by only 18-14 after one quarter but took charge by outscoring Trinity 40-17 over the next two quarters.
Sean Thelk scored 11 points for PT, and Nate Miller and Cam Mills each contributed 10.
Jonah Williamson’s 15 points led Trinity (3-6, 8-12), which has locked up a postseason berth.
West Greene 38, Jefferson-Morgan 30
Lane Allison scored a game-high 19 points and West Greene defeated visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a low-scoring game, 38-30, in Class A Section 2.
Both teams have clinched playoff berths.
West Greene (7-2, 12-7), which still has a chance to gain a share of the section title, led 18-12 at halftime and 28-20 after three quarters.
Jefferson-Morgan is 4-5 in section and 12-9 overall.
Belle Vernon 72, Albert Gallatin 61
Zion Moore poured in 27 points, Alonzo Wade had a double-double and Belle Vernon defeated visiting Albert Gallatin 72-61 in Class 4A Section 3.
Wade scored 14 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and had five assists for the Leopards (7-2, 12-6). Curtis Wade chipped in with 12 points. Moore also had five assists.
J.J. Jackson’s 17 points led three AG players in double figures. The Colonials are 3-6, 8-10 and are still in playoff contention.
Upper St. Clair 67, Canon-McMillan 44
Upper St. Clair doubled up visiting Canon-McMillan in the first half and went on to a 67-44 victory in Class 6A Section 2.
USC (7-2, 14-5) forged a 40-20 halftime lead and cruised from that point.
Tyler Robbins led three USC players in double figures with 19 points.
Evan Morris scored 12 points for Canon-McMillan (4-5, 9-11).
Monessen 59, Mapletown 48
Monessen overcame a slow start and defeated visiting Mapletown 59-48 in Class A Section 2, a win that clinched at least a share of the section title for the Greyhounds.
Monessen (8-1, 16-3) trailed 15-6 after one quarter but regrouped and closed to within 23-22 at halftime. The Greyhounds used an 18-13 scoring edge in the third quarter to take the lead for good.
Lorenzo Gardner paced Monessen with a game-high 21 points and Tyvaughn Kershaw had 14.
A.J. Vanata had 15 points to lead Mapletown (1-7, 2-15). Jeremiah Mick scored 12 points and Josh Mick had 10.
Carlynton 55, Avella 35
Jake Moldovan scored a game-high 23 points and Carlynton rode a big first quarter to a 55-35 victory over visiting Avella in Class A Section 1.
Carlynton’s win moved the Cougars (4-5, 5-14) into a tie in the standings with Avella (4-5, 9-12). Carlynton got off to a fast start, leading 21-8 after one quarter and Avella never recovered. The Eagles did close to within 36-27 after three quarters but were outscored 19-8 in the fourth period.
Westley Burchianti and Bryce Wright each tossed in 13 points to lead the Eagles’ attack.
Serra Catholic 65, Chartiers-Houston 53
Isaiah Petty scored 31 points, leading Serra Catholic to a 65-53 come-from-behind win over host Chartiers-Houston in a non-section game between playoff teams in Class 2A.
Chartiers-Houston (15-6) led 26-22 at halftime but Serra outscored the Bucs 20-8 in the pivotal third quarter. The Eagles’ Owen Dumbroski, who scored 19 points, made three of his four three-pointers in the third quarter.
Chris Warren, with 11 points, gave Serra a third player in twin figures.
Nate Gregory tallied 15 points for Chartiers-Houston (14-6) and Avery Molek followed with 13.
California 72, Geibel Catholic 46
Vinny Manzella scored 23 points, Noah Neil added 16 and California wrapped up third place in Class A Section 2 with a 72-46 win at Geibel Catholic.
Manzella made five of California’s eight three-point field goals. The hot-shooting Trojans led 47-23 at halftime.
Jaquese Derns and Jacob Ziolecki each scored 10 points for California (6-3, 7-14).
Tom Kolencik and Gary Tarbuk each had 18 points for Geibel.
Beth-Center 66, Bentworth 57
Jason Zelie scored 18 points, Amos Parker had 16 and Beth-Center won at Bentworth 66-57 in a Class 2A Section 4 game.
Jonah Sussan gave Beth-Center (4-7, 6-14) three players in double figures as she finished with 13 points for the Bulldogs, who led 35-26 at halftime.
Bentworth’s Ben Hays had a big game for Bentworth (2-10, 3-16) as he poured in a game-high 33 points. Chris Harper chipped in with 11.
Mount Pleasant 63, Waynesburg 54
Mount Pleasant outscored host Waynesburg 32-18 in the fourth quarter, rallying for a 63-54 victory over the Raiders in Class 3A Section 4.
Waynesburg (2-9, 7-14) led 23-20 at halftime and 36-31 after three quarters.
Connor Pavlochak led the Mount Pleasant comeback as he scored a game-high 19 points. Chase McCloy had 15.
Waynesburg was led in scoring by Cole Headlee’s 15 points. Alex Eck scored 14 points and Alex Vansickle had 10.
Girls results
Peters Township 52, Chartiers Valley 33
Natlie Wetzel and Gemma Walker combined for 33 points and Peters Township inched closer to a perfect regular season with a 52-33 home-court victory over Chartiers Valley in Class 6A Section 2.
The Indians (11-0, 20-0), who had already wrapped up the outright section title, have two games remaining: Friday at Canon-McMillan in the section finale and a non-section contest Monday at home against Greensburg Central Catholic.
PT led 22-14 at halftime and 31-19 entering the fourth quarter. The Indians got their offense going over the final eight minutes, scoring 21 points.
Wetzel led the PT attack with 17 points and Walker followed with 16. Daniela Radulovich gave the Indians three players in double figures as she finished with 11.
Chartiers Valley (7-4, 14-5) entered the game as the second-place team in the section but the Colts have lost three of their last four.
West Greene 45, Jefferson-Morgan 32
West Greene used one huge quarter – the third – to beat visiting Jefferson-Morgan 45-32 in Class A Section 2.
West Greene (5-4, 8-13), which has locked up a playoff spot, trailed 16-14 at halftime but outscored Jefferson-Morgan 23-4 in the pivotal third quarter to take a 37-20 lead.
Kendra Tharp led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points and Madelyn Roberts had 10.
Kayla Larkin led J-M (1-8, 3-17) with 14 points.
