Girls basketball: Trinity wins on road, gets share of section title

The Trinity girls basketball team’s refusal to fold after four consecutive overtime losses in January has been rewarded. The Hillers have a section championship to celebrate.

Trinity won a share of the Class 5A Section 4 title Thursday night, going on the road and winning at Lincoln Park, 32-29.

Trinity (8-2, 17-5), which has been trailing at the end of regulation in only one game all season, finishes in a first-place tie with Lincoln Park (8-2, 19-2). Lincoln Park had defeated Trinity in overtime at Hiller Hall in their first meeting.

This time, Trinity won with defense. They held Lincoln Park to single-digit scoring in all four quarters. The Hillers led 14-11 at halftime and 22-20 after three quarters.

Maddie Roberts led Trinity with another blue-collar-like effort of 11 points and 14 rebounds. Ruby Morgan tossed in 10 points and Aggie Niccolai had nine.

Lincoln Park’s Maddy Syka, who scored 39 in her team’s win at Trinity, was held to 11 points. Sarah Scott had 10.

Waynesburg 47, Brownsville 43

Kaley Rohanna scored 19 points, Addison Blair added 11 and Waynesburg earned a share of the Class 3A Section 4 championship with a hard-fought 47-43 win at Brownsville.

The Raiders (9-1, 19-2) share the section title with South Park, which defeated Yough.

Waynesburg was locked in a 23-23 tie with Brownsville (5-4, 12-8) but a 14-4 scoring edge in the pivotal third quarter was what sent the Raiders to the section title.

Waynesburg stayed ahead by making 13 of 14 free throws. Rohanna was 10-for-10.

Skyler Gates kept Brownsville within striking by pouring in a game-high 29 points. The Falcons had only three players crack the scoring column.

Fort Cherry 53, Sto-Rox 14

Fort Cherry ran its winning streak to nine games and secured a share of the Class 2A Section 2 championship by rolling to a 53-14 victory over visiting Sto-Rox.

The Rangers (9-1, 17-4), who have lost only one game since the calendar turned to 2024, were in total control against overmatched Sto-Rox (0-9, 4-17), building a 22-0 lead after one quarter.

Katie Blickenderfer led the Fort Cherry attack with a game-high 13 points. Raney Staub followed with 12 and Olivia Kemp had 10.

Burgettstown 58, Carlynton 7

Kailtyn Nease continued her big scoring week with 31 points, powering Buregttstown to a 58-7 win over host Carlynton.

The victory secured a share of the Class 2A Section 2 title. It’s the fourth year in a row that Burgettstown has won a section championship and the eighth in school history.

The Blue Devils (9-1, 12-9) led 19-2 after one quarter and 42-3 at halftime.

Washington 46, Beth-Center 42

Olivia Woods scored a game-high 19 points, sparking Washington to a 46-42 win at Beth-Center in Class 2A Section 4.

The victory secures at least a share of the section title for Wash High (11-1, 13-8). Chartiers-Houston can tie with the Prexies if the Bucs win tonight at Carmichaels.

Beth-Center (7-5, 11-10) led 22-18 at halftime and 30-28 after three quarters. Washington won with an 18-12 scoring edge in the fourth.

Violet Trump and Lauren Brown each had a double-double for the Bulldogs. Trump had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Brown had 11 points to go with 14 rebounds.

California 71, Frazier 41

Haley Gibson scored a career-high 29 points and Rakiyah Porter tossed in 22, including her 1,000th career point, as California steamrolled Frazier 71-41 in Class 2A Section 4.

McGuffey 72, Charleroi 49

McGuffey got its shooting touch back, and just in time for the postseason.

Taylor Schumacher led three Highlanders in double figures with a game-high 26 points as McGuffey defeated visiting Charleroi 72-49 in Class 3A Section 4.

McGuffey (4-6, 14-7) stopped a four-game slide and did it early, bolting out to a 24-9 lead after one quarter5 and a 37-18 halftime edge.

Madison Gaso and Libby Mallah each chipped in with 13 points for the Highlanders.

Bella Carroto led Charleroi (1-9, 9-12) in scoring with 13 points and Ella Sypolt had 12.

Monessen 59, Avella 37

Class A Section 2 champion Monessen pulled away in the second half for a 59-37 win at Avella.

Sidney Campbell led the Greyhounds (10-0, 16-4) with 16 points and was followed by Madison Johnson with 12 and Hailey Johnson with 10. Monessen led 26-20 at halftime.

Ava Frank scored a game-high 22 points for Avella, which ends its season at 2-8 in section and 4-18 overall.

Geibel Catholic 49, Jefferson-Morgan 25

Ava Henderson led three Geibel Catholic players in double figures with 18 points and the Gators defeated host Jefferson-Morgan 49-25 in a Class A Section 2 game.

Emma Larkin added 15 points and Ava Partridge had 14 for the Gators (8-2, 15-6). Geibel led 20-9 at halftime and pulled out to a 42-15 advantage after three quarters.

Jefferson-Morgan is 1-9 in section and 3-19 overall.

Boys results

Ringgold 61, South Park 55

Ringgold fended off a second-half rally by the visiting Eagles for a 61-55 non-section home win Wednesday.

Ringgold led 33-24 at halftime. South Park cut the deficit to 47-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Demitri Lowe (14), Aidan Angotti (13), Daryl Tolliver (12), and Szyair Dungee (11) all scored in double figures for the Rams.

South Park’s Luke Scarff scored a game-high 19 points. Cooper Hocendonner finished with 15 and Danny Battista added 12.

Bentworth 73, Mapletown 57

Chris Harper, Ryan Moessner, Lucas Burt and Ben Hays combined for 64 points to lead the Bearcats to a 73-57 home-court win over Mapletown in a non-section game Wednesday.

Harper scored a game-high 25 points for Bentworth (4-16). Moessner finished with 15 points, Burt contributed 13 points and Hays added 10.

Josh Mick led the Maples (2-17) with 16 points. Braden McIntire scored 15 and Roger Gradek added 12.
