High school basketball: West Greene girls shut down Jeannette

West Greene’s girls basketball team will have to take a long bus trip up north Thursday.
The Pioneers will gladly pack their bags.
West Greene’s defense held down Jeannette in the first half, and the Pioneers never looked back in a 55-33 victory Monday night in the first round of the WPIAL Class A girls playoffs at West Greene.
The Pioneers (10-13) will travel to top-seed Union (16-5) in the quarterfinals. The tip-off is yet to be determined.
West Greene had a 17-3 lead after the first quarter and a 27-11 halftime advantage. The home team outscored the Jayhawks 15-10 in the third and 13-12 in the fourth.
Jeannette’s Adriana Allison scored a game-high 25 points.
The Pioneers had three players in double figures with Kendra Tharp’s 13 points leading the way. Madelyn Roberts added 12 and Kasie Meek 11.

Mohawk 74, McGuffey 39
Mohawk outscored McGuffey by 16 points in the first and third quarters for a 74-39 victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs at Mohawk.
Mohawk (16-7) had a 22-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Highlanders (14-9) cut the halftime deficit to 35-20 after edging the home team in the second quarter, 14-13.
Mohawk blew the game open with a 23-7 advantage in the third, and had a 16-12 edge in the fourth.
Bobby Fadden scored a game-high 25 points for the hosts. Teammates Jay Wrona and James Nail had 12 points apiece, and Justin Boston dropped 10.
Ayden Cunningham led McGuffey in scoring with 11 points.
Bethel Park 34, South Fayette 32
To call Bethel Park’s 34-32 victory over South Fayette in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs a defensive struggle would be an understatement.
The Lions (14-9) had an 8-7 lead after the first quarter before the Black Hawks (12-11) used a 9-8 edge in the second period for a 16-16 tie at the half.
Bethel Park outscored South Fayette 7-6 in the third and 11-10 in the fourth.
South Fayette’s Gavin Orosz scored 11 points.
Shawn Davis led the Black Hawks with 9 points and Tanner Pfeuffer added 8.
