High school basketball: FC rallies to edge C-H; McGuffey wins 7th straight

Derek Errett had a double-double and freshman Ryan Huey scored a career-high 15 points, sparking Fort Cherry to a 62-55 come-from-behind win over Chartiers-Houston in a Class 2A Section 4 game played Tuesday night on the Rangers’ home court.
Chartiers-Houston (2-3, 9-5) led 19-12 after one quarter and 30-24 at halftime. But much like it did in loss last week to Frazier, C-H couldn’t hold onto the lead in the second half. Fort Cherry (3-0, 7-4) moved ahead 41-38 after three quarters and protected its advantage with some stellar free-throw shooting. The Rangers made 15 of 20 foul shots in the game.
Ferrett led the FC attack with 19 points to go with 11 rebounds. In addition to Huey’s big game, the Rangers received 12 points from Shane Cornali.
C-H’s Avery Molek had a game-high 20 points. Nate Gregory followed with 12 points and Justus Buckingham tossed in 10.
McGuffey 68, Brownsville 52
Aydan Cunningham and Grayson Wallace combined for 41 points, powering McGuffey to a 68-52 win at Brownsville in Class 3A Section 4.
The win improves the Highlanders to 2-1 in section and 10-3 overall. McGuffey has won seven straight.
The Highlanders didn’t get their offense in high gear until the second half. The game was tied 28-28 at halftime. McGuffey pulled out to a 46-43 lead after three quarters, then outscored the Falcons 22-9 in what was the pivotal fourth quarter.
Cunningham flipped in a game-high 22 points and Wallace was close behind in the scoring column with 19. Trey McGowan, with 13 points, gave McGuffey three players in double figures.
Harlan Davis led Brownsville with 17 points. Kaden Wimmer scored 10.
Peters Township 84, Ringgold 35
Peters Township couldn’t miss in the first quarter, scoring 36 points, and went on to an 84-35 thumping of Ringgold in Class 5A Section 1 game.
The Indians (2-1, 8-4) led 36-17 after one quarter and 58-23 at halftime. PT, which made 19 three-point field goals against Connellsville in its previous game, made 10 from behind the stripe against Ringgold (0-3, 3-10).
Jack Dunbar led PT in scoring with 22 points. Dylan Donovan followed with 13 and Nate Miller had 10. Donovan and Miller each scored seven points in the Indians’ big first quarter.
Darryl Tolliver was Ringgold’s top scorer with 14 points.
Burgettstown 63, Bentworth 42
Burgettstown remained undefeated in Class 2A Section 4 play with a 63-42 road win over Bentworth.
The Blue Devils are 4-0 in the section and 11-3 overall.
Zack Schrockman led the winning attack with a game-high 25 points. James Leuice and Carson Tkalcevic each tossed in 15 points for the Blue Devils, who trailed 15-13 after one quarter before opening a 27-24 halftime lead. Burgettstown pulled away in the second half, leading 47-36 after three quarters.
Ben Hays led Bentworth (1-4, 2-9) with 20 points and Chris Harper tallied 16.
Avella 69, Cornell 63
Avella overcame a 38-point performance by Cornell’s Julian Cordice and beat the visiting Raiders 68-63 in Class A Section 1.
The win pushed Avella to 2-1 in the section and to the .500 mark overall at 7-7.
The Eagles built a 40-15 halftime and then had to hold off Cordice and Cornell (0-3, 3-8) in the second half.
Bryce Wright was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 22 points. Westley Burchianti had 14 points and nine rebounds.
Jefferson-Morgan 54, California 47
Dayten Marion poured in a game-high 23 points, sparking Jefferson-Morgan to a 53-47 road win over California in Class A Section 2.
The Rockets (2-1, 9-4) didn’t take control of the game until the second half. After trailing 24-22 at halftime, J-M outscored California 18-9 in the pivotal third quarter to grab a 40-33 lead.
John Woodward scored 13 points for the Rockets.
California (2-1, 2-10), which suffered its first section loss, received 16 points from Noah Neil and 14 from Vince Manzella.
Frazier 64, Carmichaels 57
Carmichaels battled back in the fourth quarter to force overtime at Frazier, but the Commodores used a 12-5 scoring edge in the extra session to beat the Mikes 64-57 in Class 2A Section 4.
Carmichaels (0-3, 3-8) trailed 30-26 at halftime and 44-38 after three quarters. The Mikes rallied and forced overtime at 52-52.
Robbie Wilson-Jones scored a game-high 19 points for the Mikes. Aydan Adamson contributed 15 points and Rob Colarusso had 13.
Dailan McManus led three players in double figures for Frazier (2-1, 7-5) with 16 points.
Washington 69, Waynesburg 46
The Prexies won their eighth in a row and remained undefeated in Class 3 Section 4 play following a victory at Waynesburg.
Washington (5-0, 8-5) was never in danger after opening the first quarter with a 10-point lead. The Prexies had a 35-20 advantage at halftime. Washington outscored the Raiders, 16-11, in the third quarter, and 18-15 in the fourth.
Three Prexies were in double digits, as Zxavian Willis led the way with 19 points. De’Ondre Daugherty dropped 14 and Ruben Gordon added 10.
Dane Woods led Waynesburg (0-3, 2-8) in scoring with 16 points. Jackson Dean was in double figures with 10.
Thomas Jefferson 71, Trinity 46
The Hillers hung tough in the first quarter, but the Jaguars took control in the second quarter and never looked back in a Class 5A Section 1 triumph.
Thomas Jefferson (3-0, 9-2) held a three-point lead after the first quarter, but outscored Trinity, 30-15, in the second for a 46-28 halftime advantage. The Jaguars clamped down on the defensive end in the third and limited the Hillers (1-2, 6-6) to four points while scoring 19 for a 65-32 lead heading into the fourth, where Trinity had a 14-6 edge.
The Hillers’ Jacob Dunkle scored a game-high 20 points. Teammate Jonah Williamson put in 13.
Thomas Jefferson was led in scoring by Noah Prosser, who had 16 points. Nicholas Trklja had 13 and Kane Eggerton added 11.
Canon-McMillan 52, Hempfield 46
The Big Macs rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to earn a Class 6 Section 2 victory at Hempfield.
The Spartans (0-2, 3-9) had a 28-19 advantage after the second quarter before Canon-McMillan (1-1, 6-6) cut the deficit to 38-35 after outscoring the home team, 16-10, in the third quarter. The Big Macs had a 17-8 advantage in the fourth.
Canon-McMillan’s Ryan Galicic had 15 points. Teammates Evans Morris (11) and Eamon O’Donoghue (10) were also in double figures.
Hempfield’s Drew Gordon led all scorers with 19 points.
Belle Vernon 81, Laurel Highlands 52
Belle Vernon took an early lead and cruised to a victory over Laurel Highlands in a Class 4A Section 4 win.
The Leopards (2-1, 7-3) had a 22-7 advantage after the first quarter and extended their lead to 44-23 at halftime. Belle Vernon had a 73-34 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
LH (0-3, 2-11) outscored the home team 19-8 in the fourth with most of the primary players for each team on the bench with the mercy rule in effect.
The Leopards’ Zion Moore had a game-high 20 points. Curtis Wade scored 19, and Tommy Davis and Alonzo Wade chipped in with 12 points apiece.
Ethan Koffler led the Mustangs in scoring with 17 points.
Girls basketball
Canon-McMillan 58, Baldwin 36
The Highlanders hung around the first three quarters, but the Big Macs took control in the fourth for a Class 6A Section 2 triumph at Baldwin.
Canon-McMillan (2-2, 9-4) had a 13-10 lead after the opening period and a 26-19 halftime advantage. The Big Macs led 38-29 after three frames before outscoring the home team, 20-7, in the fourth.
Canon-McMillan’s Lauren Borella scored 20 points. The Big Macs’ Madison Clair added 11 and Samantha Miller put in 10.
Peters Township 68, Mount Lebanon 48
The Indians remain undefeated after a Class 6A Section 2 triumph over the Blue Devils at AHN Arena.
Peters Township (4-0, 13-0) had a 22-12 lead after the first and extended it to 38-25 advantage. Both teams scored 12 in the third and the Indians outscored Mount Lebanon, 18-11, in the fourth.
Peters Township’s Gemma Walker had a game-high 21 points. Teammate Natalie Wetzel added 20 and Alina Sopko had 11.
Payton Collins led the Blue Devils (3-3, 6-2) in scoring with 15.
