Girls basketball: McGuffey fights off Charleroi; Linsly ends Trinity’s streak

McGuffey scored 24 fourth-quarter points to hold off host Charleroi 65-60 in a key Class 3A Section 4 girls basketball game Monday night.
McGuffey (3-2, 12-2) remains in third place in the section while Charleroi (0-5, 7-8) is still searching for its first league win.
The game was close throughout as the Highlanders led 26-20 at halftime and 41-38 after three quarters.
Lexi Ewig led the McGuffey attack with a game-high 23 points. Taylor Schumacher followed with 13 points and Libby Mallah contributed 12.
Ella Sypolt paced Charleroi with 22 points and Bella Carroto had 15. The Cougars scored 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Linsly 61, Trinity 58, OT
Hannah Cook and Rosa Solberg each scored 17 points and Linsly outscored Trinity 7-4 in overtime to beat the Hillers 61-58.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak by Trinity (11-2).
The Hillers had to battle back to force overtime. Linsly led 27-25 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 44-38 entering the fourth quarter. Trinity forced overtime tied at 54-54 by outscoring the Cadets 16-10 in the fourth quarter.
Ruby Morgan led the Hillers’ attack with 17 points and Sutton Williamson followed with 16.
Trinity hosts Lincoln Park in a Class 5A Section 4 game Tuesday night.
Waynesburg 49, Brownsville 41
Waynesburg used a 17-point performance by Kaley Rohanna and two strong quarters – the first and third – to fight off visiting Brownsville 49-41 in a Class 3A Section 4 game.
Waynesburg improves to 5-0 in the section and 14-1 overall. The Raiders have won six in a row.
The Raiders built an 11-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and took a 21-17 lead into halftime. The key period was the third, when Waynesburg held a 14-6 edge for a 35-23 lead.
Josie Horne scored 12 points for the Raiders, who stayed ahead by making six three-pointers and 9 of 10 free throws in the game.
Ava Clark had a game-high 19 points and Skyler Gates tallied 10 for Brownsville (1-2, 8-6).
Washington 43, Beth-Center 31
Washington pulled away in the second half for a 43-31 win over Beth-Center in a Class 2A Section 4 game played at Wash High gymnasium.
The Prexies (5-1, 6-7), who have won three straight, led by only 18-16 at halftime and 29-25 entering the pivotal fourth quarter, which Wash High won by a 14-6 margin.
Taraysia Finley led the Prexies in scoring with 10 points.
Lauren Brown tossed in a game-high 14 points for Beth-Center (3-3, 6-7).
Burgettstown 53, Carlynton 12
Kaitlyn Nase had 16 points, eight rebounds and nine steals in a little more than two quarters of action, leading Burgettstown to a 53-12 thumping of visiting Carlynton in Class 2A Section 2.
The win keeps Burgettstown perfect in section play at 4-0 and moves the Blue Devils to the .500 mark overall at 8-8. Carlynton is 1-4, 4-10.
Burgettstown led 17-1 after one quarter and 31-5 at halftime.
Martina White contributed 10 points for Burgettstown and freshman Camryn Reddinger scored nine points on a trio of three-point baskets.
Chartiers-Houston 50, Carmichaels 16
Class 2A Section 4 leader Chartiers-Houston blanked Carmichaels in the first quarter and went on to a 50-16 victory in a game played on the Bucs’ home court.
Charters-Houston (6-0, 10-4) led 23-0 after one quarter and 35-6 at halftime.
Amelia Brose led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points and Ella Richey had 12.
Carmichaels is 1-4 in section and 2-11 overall.
Geibel Catholic 55, Jefferson-Morgan 48
Jefferson-Morgan was unable to overcome a 30-point performance by Geibel Catholic’s high-scoring Emma Larkin as the Gators pulled out a 55-48 home-court win over the Rockets.
Larkin led three players in double figures for Geibel (4-1, 11-3). Ava Partridge had 11 points and Ava Henderson had 10. The trio scored all but three of Geibel’s points. The Gators have won four in a row.
Jefferson-Morgan (0-4, 2-12) received 17 points from Kayla Larkin. Ali Ostrich flipped in 12 points and Ava Wood had 10. J-M trailed 16-15, 31-21 and 46-33 at the quarter stops.
Baldwin 56, Belle Vernon 15
Mary Vargo scored 16 points and Baldwin defeated Belle Vernon 56-15 in a non-section game played on the Highlanders’ home court.
Baldwin (8-7) led 28-5 at halftime.
Belle Vernon’s record dropped to 7-8.
In other games
South Fayette was a 75-49 winner at West Allegheny in Class 5A Section 4. Laurel Highlands improved its record to 12-1 with a 64-18 win over Ringgold in Class 4A Section 3. No game details were reported by press time.
