The battle for first place in Class A Section 2 boys basketball got very interesting in a period of eight minutes Wednesday night.

That’s how long it took West Greene to rally in the fourth quarter and stun Monessen 46-43 on the Greyhounds’ home court.

West Greene (4-1, 9-5) moved into a first-place tie with Monessen (4-1, 12-2) and snapped the Greyhounds’ 11-game winning streak.

Lane Allison scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Pioneers overcame deficits of 23-20 at halftime and 34-28 after three quarters. West Greene, a team without a senior on its roster, won with an 18-9 scoring edge in the fourth.

It is believed to be the first win ever for West Greene at Monessen.

“I’m really, really proud of our guys,” said West Greene’s veteran coach Jim Romanus. “I told our kids after our last game that very few people think we can win this game, but I do.

“One thing our guys do well is run the feast-break. In the fourth quarter, we took care of the ball better against their press, and they were crashing the boards against us in the fourth and we were still able to get rebounds and get the ball down the court on the fast-break to Lane.”

Parker Burns tossed in 11 points for West Greene.

Monessen was led by Timothy Kershaw’s 17 points. Lorenzo Gardner had 15.

The teams will meet again Friday, Feb. 2 in Rogersville.
