High school basketball: Waynesburg gets it around to Horne, scores another win

Josie Horne scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Waynesburg’s girls basketball team kept its stranglehold on sole possession of first place in Class 3A Section 4 with a 62-41 road win over Charleroi on Thursday.

The Raiders (6-0, 16-1), who are undefeated against teams from Pennsylvania, led 11-3 after one quarter and 29-13 at halftime.

Avery Davis tossed in 12 points and Addison Blair contributed 10 for Waynesburg, which has won eight straight.

Riley Jones led Charleroi (0-6, 7-9) with 16 points. Ella Sypolt followed with 12.

Burgettstown 54, Northgate 22

Kaitlyn Nease filled up the statistics sheet as Burgettstown remained atop Class 2A Section win with a 54-22 win at Northgate.

Nease scored a game-high 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out nine assists and collected seven steals as Burgettstown improved to 5-0 in section and 9-8 overall. Savanna Rush contributed 12 points for the Blue Devils, who won their fourth in a row.

Montour 59, Trinity 56

For the second time in three days Trinity went to overtime against a Class 5A Section 4 rival. And for the second time the Hillers took a gut-wrenching defeat.

Montour outscored Trinity 14-11 in overtime and defeated the Hillers 59-56.

Montour (1-4, 6-9) trailed 25-24 at halftime but moved ahead 40-35 after three quarters. Trinity (4-2, 11-5) forced overtime at 45-45 by outscoring the Spartans 10-5 in the final quarter of regulation.

Montour’s Jordan Wolfe had a big game with 27 points.

Rudy Morgan pumped in 22 points to lead the Hillers.

Monessen 58, Geibel Catholic 34

Monessen pulled out early in the fourth quarter for a 58-34 win over visiting Geibel Catholic in a battle for first place in Class A Section 2.

Monessen (5-0, 11-3) led 24-20 at halftime and 38-31 after three quarters. The Greyhounds held a commanding 20-3 scoring edge in the final period.

Na’jaziah Carter led four Monessen players in double figures with 13 points. Hailey Johnson was next with 12 points, Madison Johnson had 11 and Sidney Campbell scored 10.

Emma Larkin had a game-high 17 points for Geibel (4-2, 11-5). Ava Henderson had 11 points.

Belle Vernon 42, Uniontown 30

Belle Vernon moved above the .500 mark in Class 4A Section 3 play with a 42-30 win at Uniontown.

Nina Francia had a career-high 19 points to go with 14 rebounds and Saylor Lee pumped in 15 points to power the Leopards (5-4, 9-9). Belle Vernon led 16-12 at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

Geelece Ingram’s 13 points led Uniontown (2-7, 5-12).

Jefferson-Morgan 48, Mapletown 31

Kayla Larkin pumped in a game-high 26 points to power Jefferson-Morgan to a 48-31 win at Mapletown in Class A Section 2.

The Rockets (1-5, 3-14), who snapped a 10-game losing streak, trailed 11-8 after one quarter but took control with an 18-6 scoring edge in the second.

Ali Ostrich scored 10 points for J-M. Mapletown (2-4, 5-10) received 19 points from Isabella Garnek.

South Park 48, McGuffey 32

South Park overcame a 23-point performance by McGuffey’s Taylor Schumacher to beat the Highlanders 48-32 in a key Class 3A Section 4 game.

The Eagles (5-1, 11-6) won with two big quarters, outscoring McGuffey (3-3, 13-4) 18-8 in the first quarter and 13-2 in the third.

Addy Kerr led South Park in scoring with 12 points.

Boys results

Moon 58, South Fayette 49

Elijah Gillory poured in a game-high 29 points and Moon won a battle for first place in Class 5A Section 4, defeating host South Fayette 58-49.

Moon moves to 6-0 in the section and 13-3 overall. South Fayette is 4-2 in section and 10-7 overall.

After a low-scoring first half that ended with Moon on top 25-18, South Fayette had a big third quarter that moved the Lions into the lead at 36-35. Moon won with a 23-13 scoring edge in the fourth. Gillory scored 12 of his points in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Gavin Orosz had a big game for South Fayette, scoring 28 points.

In other games

South Fayette’s girls team was a 47-43 overtime winner over Moon in Class 5A Section 4. Beth-Center won at Carmichaels, 42-22, in Class 2A Section 4, and West Greene was a 49-27 winner over visiting Avella in Class A Section 2. No game details were reported by press time.
