High school basketball: No overtime needed for Trinity victory

Trinity didn’t need overtime to decide its Class 5A Section 4 girls basketball game Monday night against host Moon. That was something different after the Hillers had a recent run of five consecutive overtime games.
Trinity made sure it didn’t need extra time against Moon as Ruby Morgan had another hot shooting night and Maddie Roberts turned in a double-double as the Hillers won, 42-35.
The win pushes Trinity to 5-2 in the section and 13-5 overall.
Moon (2-4, 12-6) led 12-8 after one quarter and 18-17 at halftime. Morgan and Roberts, however, led a second-half charge by Trinity, which grabbed a 29-25 lead after three quarters.
Morgan finished with a game-high 17 points while Roberts contributed 10 points and hit the backboards for 10 rebounds.
Fort Cherry 45, Brentwood 30
Fort Cherry set up a key game with Class 2A Section 2 leader Burgettstown on Thursday by defeating host Brentwood, 45-30.
Raney Staub scored a game-high 16 points to lead the way for the Rangers, who are 6-1 in section and 14-4 overall. The Rangers have won six in a row.
Fort Cherry did have trouble shaking Brentwood (4-3, 8-11) as the Rangers led 25-18 at halftime and 37-26 after three quarters.
Jessie Yee led the Spartans in scoring with nine points.
Beth-Center 49, California 33
Violet Trump- and Lauren Brown each had a double-double, powering Beth-Center to a 49-33 victory over visiting California in Class 2A Section 4.
The win makes Beth-Center 6-4 in the section and 9-9 overall. California is 5-4 in section and 8-9 overall.
Trump had a big night with game highs of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Brown matched Trump in the scoring column with 16 points and added 10 rebounds. The duo helped B-C forge a 21-16 halftime lead and secure the victory with a 16-8 edge in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Rikiyah Porter led the Trojans with 14 points.
Charleroi 60, Yough 48
Ella Sypolt and Bella Carroto combined for 41 points, sparking Charleroi to a 60-48 win over visiting Yough in Class 3A Section 4.
It was the first section win for Charleroi (1-6, 8-9). The Cougars had to come from behind in the second half to get the victory as they trailed 24-20 at halftime. They moved out to a 36-35 lead after three quarters and secured the win with a commanding 24-13 edge in the fourth quarter.
Sypolt led the way with 21 points and Carroto was close behind with 20. Riley Jones, with 11 points, gave Charleroi three players in double figures.
Autumn Matthew poured in a game-high 26 points for Yough (1-5, 8-9).
Mapletown 40, Avella 38
Mckenna Lotspeich scored 15 points and Mapletown held off Avella 40-38 in Class A Section 2.
Mapletown (3-4, 6-10) led 18-10 at halftime but Avella (1-6, 3-14) came roaring back in the third quarter, outscoring the Maples 20-10 to take a 30-28 lead. Mapletown won with a 12-8 scoring edge in the fourth quarter that included several key free throws in the final minute.
Helena Cumpston scored 10 points for the Maples.
Haleigh Rush had 15 points for Avella and Ava Frank followed with 14. Frank scored eight of her points in the Eagles’ big third quarter.
Belle Vernon 47, Southmoreland 24
Caroline Lee had a double-double that included a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds as Belle Vernon rolled over Southmoreland 47-24 in Class 4A Section 3.
The Leopards (6-4, 10-10) raced out to a 26-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 36-7 advantage into halftime.
Kenzi Seliga scored 11 points for Belle Vernon.
Southmoreland is 1-8 in section and 2-16 overall.
Carmichaels 40, Bentworth 36
Megan Voithofer scored 13 points and Carmichaels overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat host Bentworth 40-36 in Class 2A Section 4.
Carmichaels trailed 23-16 at halftime but moved ahead 30-29 after three quarters and held a 10-7 scoring edge in the pivotal final period.
Aubrie Logan and Amber Salle combined for 31 of Bentworth’s 31 points and seven three-point field goals. Logan led with 16 points and four three-pointers. Sallee had 15 points.
Monessen 57, Jefferson-Morgan 15
Monessen was a 57-15 winner at Jefferson-Morgan to remain unbeaten in Class A Section 2. The Greyhounds are 7-0 in the section and 13-3 overall.
Boys results
Fort Cherry 85, Beth-Center 56
Shane Cornali had a rare triple-double, sparking Class 2A Section 4 leader Fort Cherry to an 85-56 thumping of Beth-Center.
Cornali finished with 27 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals as the Rangers moved to 9-0 in the section and 14-4 overall. Fort Cherry has won eight in a row.
The Rangers scored 66 points in the first half, including 35 in the second quarter. FC led 66-32 at halftime.
Cornali shared game scoring honors with teammate, Derek Errett, who also pumped in 27 points.
Jonah Sussan scored 11 points for Beth-Center (3-5, 5-12).
In other games
Class 5A Section 4 girls basketball leader Lincoln Park held off visiting South Fayette, 45-42, and Geibel Catholic was a 49-44 home-court winner over West Greene in a key Class A Section 2 game. No game details were reported by press time.
