Fort Cherry rallies for PIAA playoff win

KARNS CITY – Senior point guard Derek Errett poured in a game-high 26 points spearheaded a second-half comeback as Fort Cherry defeated host Karns City 61-52 in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A boys basketball playoffs Saturday afternoon.

Fort Cherry (21-6) advances to the second round Wednesday and will play Serra Catholic (18-9), the seventh-place team from the WPIAL.

Karns City, the District 9 runner-up, ends ist season with a 20-8 record.

The Rangers had a slow start and trailed 13-7 after one quarter and 30-22 at halftime before outscoring the Gremlins 39-22 in the pivotal second half.

Fort Cherry started its comeback in the third quarter, cutting Karns City’s lead to 40-39 entering the final eight minutes of play. Fort Cherry dominated the fourth quarter with a 22-12 scoring edge.

Blake Sweder helped fuel the Rangers’ comeback by scoring 14 points.

Shane Peters led Karns City in scoring with 14 points. Jacob Callihan added 11.
