Bentworth’s Chris Vargo may have fallen short of his goal to win a state championship, but the Bearcat senior will have the opportunity to show the wrestling world one more time that he can wrestle with the best in the country.
Vargo, who defeated Bishop McCort sophomore Jax Forrest 13-7 in the Class 2A southwest regional final at 127 pounds on March 2 but lost to Forrest in the state finals last week, will wrestle JJ McComas of Stillwater, Okla., as a member of the Pennsylvania All-Star team on March 30 in the 50th Annual Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic inside AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School.
The event will feature three dual meets starting with a team of senior Pennsylvania girls competing against the Ohio All-Stars at 3 p.m. before the senior WPIAL All-Stars face the New Jersey All-Stars at 4. The main event features a group of senior all-stars throughout the United States against the Pennsylvania team at 6.
Vargo (133-12) will be wrestling an Oklahoma State recruit who is ranked fourth in the country by FloWrestling. The Charleroi student who wrestled for Bentworth as part of a co-op will continue wrestling in college at Edinboro, and when he defeated Forrest, the Bishop McCort wrestler was ranked second in the country.
The WPIAL team will be represented by three Washington County wrestlers in Chartiers-Houston’s Jorden Williams (114), Canon-McMillan’s Andrew Binni (127) and Trinity’s Bodie Morgan (172).
Binni (133-34) was fourth in his final state tournament in Class 3A. He will continue his academic and wrestling careers at the Naval Academy. Binni is ranked No. 13 in the country by FloWrestling. He injured his ankle during his consolation finals match at the state tournament but will be ready to go.
Morgan (94-34) was second in the state at 172 in Class 3A. He will continue to wrestle at Davidson.
Williams (100-40) has declared if he will continue to wrestle in college, but he placed fifth in Class 2A at the state tournament, and won his 100th-career match in the process.
Canon-McMillan senior and state champion Val Solorio (100) declined her invitation because she will be out of town the day of the event.
