Tigers rally to beat Pirates

BRADENTON, Fla. – Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal dominated in his first start of spring training, throwing two hitless innings with two strikeouts and the Tigers went on to a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

The Tigers took the lead, 4-3, in the eighth inning when catcher Anthony Bemboom turned on a slider from Pirates reliever Dauri Moreta and hit it for a solo home run to right field. Wenceel Perez, a switch-hitter, increased the lead to 5-3 when he pulled a solo home run from the left side against Moreta.

The Pirates had a 3-0 lead.

Shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng hit a two-run homer to center field off Alex Lang. Connor Joe added a solo shot with two outs to make it 3-0 in the third..

Detroit answered in the fifth when former Pirates outfielder Bligh Madris homered off Aroldis Chapman.

Detriot outhit Pittsburgh, 8-5.
