Though the Wild Things have been at the top of the Frontier League’s West Division standings for the past seven weeks, they did not have a player voted to the starting lineup for the league’s annual all-star game.
The league on Friday released the rosters for the all-star game, which will be played Wednesday, July 17 in Quebec City.
For the second year in a row, Washington will not have a position player in the starting lineup for the West Division. The Wild Things did have four players, including three pitchers, selected to the team.
Washington will be represented by lefty starter Kobe Foster, right-handed starter Zach Kirby and closer Gyeongju Kim, along with center fielder Caleb McNeely, who will be a reserve.
“I’m very happy for the guys who were selected,” Washington manager Tom Vaeth said. “I think we have several guys who are deserving and didn’t get selected. We’ve been pretty consistent all year and could have gotten more players selected.”
McNeely leads the league in RBI with 44 and is second in home runs with 10. He also has 16 stolen bases and is batting .294.
Foster improved his record to 5-1 Thursday night with seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Florence. Foster’s ERA is 2.73. Kirby (4-4, 2.40) has been among the league’s ERA leaders all season. Kim (2-2, 1.44) is tied for second in the league with 12 saves.
Schaumburg had the most position players (3) voted in as starters for the West. Lake Erie had the most players selected to the team with five.
In the East, New York and Trois-Rivieres each have three starters. New York has nine players on the East team.
The West starters are Lake Erie catcher Alfredo Gonzalez, Joliet first baseman Matthew Warkentin, Schaumburg second baseman Alec Craig, Gateway third baseman D.J. Stewart, Schaumburg shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson, Schaumburg outfielder Christian Fedko and Florence outfielders T.J. Reeves and Hank Zeisler.
