Wild Things lose on walk-off HR

SCHAUMBURG, ILL. — Schaumburg avoided a sweep in a 11-10 victory over Washington Sunday afternoon.

The Wild Things (22-10) lost on the road for the third time in 17 games this season, but still hold a half-game lead over Lake Erie (22-11) in the West Division standings.

Washington maintains a half-game advantage over New York (21-10) in the Frontier League.

The Boomers’ Aaron Simmons hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning after Kyle Fitzgerald went deep to tie the game at 10 earlier in the frame.

Schaumburg (20-12) trailed by five in the top of the seventh, but cut the deficit to 9-7 in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Fitzgerald and a two-run homer from Simmons.

Christian Fedko’s two-run shot in the eighth tied the game at 9-9 before Wagner Lagrange scored on Tommy Caufield’s RBI single and the Wild Things regained the lead at 10-9 in the top of the ninth.

Andrew Czech’s two-out single in the first gave Washington a 1-0 lead. Ethan Wilder’s RBI base hit scored Lagrange, who reached on an infield hit for a 2-0 advantage.

Simmons’ RBI single in the second cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Wild Things increased their lead to three in the fourth on JC Santini’s run-scoring double and Derek Gellos’ sacrifice fly that was his first as a professional.

Willie Joe Garry’s RBI single scored Chase Dawson that trimmed Washington’s lead to 4-2 in the bottom half of the fourth.

Czech’s RBI double and Wilder’s line-drive single upped the Wild Things’ advantage to 6-2 in the fifth.

Fedko had a two-run single in the Boomers’ half of the fifth before Lagrange launched a second a solo homer and Caufield singled home a pair for a 9-4 lead.
