SAUGET, Ill. – Caleb McNeely and Derek Gellos each hit three-run homers in Washington’s six-run first inning and the Wild Things defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 6-1 Tuesday night in a game shortened to five innings because of rain.

Washington wasted no time in taking control of the game against Gateway starter Teague Conrad (3-2) as Evan Berkey led off the game by drawing a walk and Alex Ovalles followed with a free pass. That brought McNeely to the plate and his three-run homer gave Washington all the offense it would need.

Five batters later, rookie first baseman Derek Gellos hit his first professional home run, giving the Wild Things a 6-0 lead.

Washington rookie starting pitcher Aaron Forrest (2-0) kept the visitors in the lead by allowing one run over five innings. He gave up four hits.

The start of the game was delayed because of rain and the precipitation returned after the fifth inning. Following a delay of about 65 minutes, the umpires called the game, giving Washington its 17th win in 21 road games.

The Wild Things and Grizzlies will play the second game of the series this morning at 11:45 a.m.
